RELATIONSHIP(NURSE-
PATIENT RELATIONSHIP)
INTRODUCTION
 Nurse patient relationship (NPR) is a basic
requirement of nursing practice.
 During interaction with the patient, the
nurses develops the therapeutic relationship.
 The types of relationship can be social and
therapeutic or professional.
 Therapeutic relationship is developed during
nurse-patient relationship.
DEFINITION

 Nurse-patient relationship is an interaction


process in which the nurse fulfills her role by
using her professional knowledge and skill in
such a way that she is able to help the patient
physically, socially and emotionally.
DIMENSONS OF HELPING
RELATIONSHIP
 The various dimensions of helping
relationship or nurses patient relationship
are:
 The nurse helps the patient to cope with the
present problems.
 The nurse helps the patient to understand his
problem.
 The nurse helps the patient to find out new
alternative for his or her problem.
 The nurse helps the patient to try out new
patterns of behaviour.
 The nurse helps the patient to communicate
effectively with others.
 The nurses helps the patient to find a
meaning in his/her illness.
PHASE OF HELPING RELATIONSHIP

 Professionalrelationship are created through


the nurse’s application of knowledge,
understanding of human behaviour and
communication and commitment to ethical
behaviour.
 There are four phases of helping
relationship:-
 A) Preinteraction phase
 B) Orientation phase
 C) Working phase
 D) Termination phase
PREINTERACTION PHASE

 Before meeting the clients, the nurse:


 Reviews available data, including the medical
and nursing history.
 Talks to other caregivers who may have
information about the client.
 Identifies a location and setting that will
foster comfortable, private interaction.
 Plan enough time for the initial interaction
ORIENTATION PHASE

 When the nurse and client meet and get to


know one another, the nurse:
 Sets the tone for the relationship by adopting
a warm, empathetic, caring manner.
 Expects the clients to test the nurse’s
competence and commitment.
 Closely observes the client and expects to be
closely observed by the client.
 Assesses the client’s health status.
 Prioritizes the client’s problems and identifies
the client’s goals.
 Clarifies the client’s and nurse’s roles.
 Contest forms should be taken from the
clients for the specific procedures.
WORKING PHASE

 When the nurses and client work together to


solve problem and accomplish goals, the nurses:
 Encourage and helps the client to express
feelings about his or her health.
 Encourage and helps the client to set goals.
 Take actions to meet the goals set with the
client.
 Uses therapeutic communication skills to
facilitate successful interaction
TERMINATION PHASE

 During the ending of relationship the nurse:


 Reminds the client that termination is near.
 Evaluates goal achievements with the client.
 Separates from the client by relinquishing
responsibilities for his or her care.
 Achieves a smooth transaction for the client
to other caregivers as needed
COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVE WITH
PATIENTS
 Helping relationships are foundation of
nursing clinical practice.
 The nurses using effective therapeutic
communication technique can help a patient
to achieve successful outcomes for the
problems currently preventing them from
achieving optimum health.
 Socialization is an important initial
component of interpersonal communication.
A calm and warm communication techniques
helps to establish trust, but nurses must also
talk about issues or concerns affecting the
client’s health.
 Creating a therapeutic environment depends
on the nurse’s ability to communicate to
comfort and to help client’s meet their needs
COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVE WITH
FAMILIES
 Many nursing situations, especially those in
community and home care settings, require
the nurses to form helping relationship with
the entire family.
 The family structure and functions influence
the lives of its individual members.
 Health promotion through health education
is an important too in family nursing
practice.
 Familynursing require the nurses to
communicate effectively with all the
members of the family and understand the
current trends related to family and its health
care implication.
COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY WITH
HEALTH TEAM MEMBERS
 Nurses function in roles that require
interaction with multiple health team
members.
 Communication is such a relationship is
aimed towards team building, facilitating
group process, collaboration, consultation,
delegation, suppression , leadership and
management.
