Net Zero Building

This document summarizes the passive and active design strategies that make the Indira Paryavaran Bhawan in New Delhi India's first net zero energy building. The building utilizes solar orientation, extensive landscaping and daylighting to minimize energy needs. It also implements active strategies like a 930 kW solar PV system, geothermal cooling, rainwater harvesting and recycled materials to achieve net zero energy consumption. Through these comprehensive passive and active designs, the building generates as much renewable energy annually as it consumes.

NET ZERO BUILDING

Passive Design Strategies

•Orientation: Building is north south oriented,
with separate blocks connected through
corridors and a huge central court yard.
Orientation minimizes heat ingress. Optimal
window to wall ratio.
•Landscaping: More than 50% area outside
the building is covered with plantation.
Circulation roads and pathways are  soft
paved to enable ground water recharge.
•Daylighting: 75% of building floor space is
day lit, thus reducing dependence on artificial

materials. ACTIVE STRATEGIES
• Reduction in water consumption has been achieved by use of low-discharge
Renewable Energy water fixtures
• Recycling of waste water through sewage treatment plant
•Solar PV System of 930 kW capacity • Use of plants with low water demand in landscaping
•Total Area : 6000 m2
• Use of geothermal cooling for HVAC system
•Total Area of panels : 4650 m2
•No of panels : 2,844 • Rainwater harvesting and use of curing compounds during construction
•Annual Energy Generation : 14.3 lakh • There are 180 vertical bores to the depth of 80 meter all along the building
unit premises. Minimum 3 meter distance is maintained between any two bores.
Materials and construction techniques :
• AAC blocks with fly ash
• Fly ash based plaster & mortar
• Stone and Ferro cement jaalis
• Local stone flooring
• Bamboo jute composite doors,
frames and flooring
• High efficiency glass, high VLT,
low SHGC & Low U-value,
optimized by appropriate
shading
• Light shelves for diffused
sunlight
