Functions of Family

Introduction
• The family is an active social unit, always
changing and always related to other families
within the society of which it is a part. Its
functions are complex and far - reaching/, but
specific areas can be described. All families
have certain family functions that are performed
to maintain the integrity of the family unit and
to meet the family unit's need, individual family
members' needs and society's expectations.
Functions
Residence
To provide clean and descent home to its member
• In west when men marries he separate with his
parents and sets up his own home
• In India married couple should resides in the house
of the parent
• Two types of residency:
 Patrilocal residency
 Matrilocal residency
Division of labour
• The male had the duty to earn a living and
support the family
• The female had total responsibility for day to
day care of children and running of household
• Now a days there are less difference between
function of men and women ---- the coming
together and sharing responsibility
Reproduction and bringing up of children
• This is very important function
• The mother take absolute care of infant and
children during certain age
• The father provides for education and teaches
the social tradition and customs
Socialization:
• The family is bridge between generations and
between father and son
• The cultural pattern relating to eating,
cleanliness, dress, speech, language, behavior
and attitude transmitted through the family
Economic function:
The family hold the properties and ownership
like farms, shop, dwelling are handed down to
the children
Social care:
The family provides social care by….
 Giving status in society
 Protecting its member from insult
 Regulating marital activities of its members
 Regulating to a certain extent political, religion
and general social activities
According to Murray (1975) family functions
are of three types:
1) Physical function : provision of food,
clothing, and shelter, protection against
danger, provision for health and illness care. '
2) Affectional functions: meeting emotional
needs.
3) Social functions : provision for social
togetherness, fostering self esteem, supporting
creativity and initiative.
According to Davis the main social functions of
the family are in four divisions

• a) reproduction
• b) maintenance
• c) placement
• d) socialization of the young.
Lundberg has enumerated the following' basic
functions of the family:

a) the regulation of sexual behavior and


reproduction
b) care and training of children
c) co-operation and division of labor
d) primary group satisfaction.
According to MacIver Functions of the family can be grouped under two groups:

Essential function Non Essential Functions:


• satisfaction of sex need • Economic
• Production and rearing of • Religious
children • Health
• Provision of home. • Recreation
• Civic
• Social.
Duvall(1985) identified six family functions
that are generally applicable to all types of
family structure:
1) Generating affection: affection is generated between
spouses, between parents and children and among
members of the generations,
2) Providing personal security and acceptance: the
family provides a home base with stability that allows
the family members to develop ,naturally in their own '
way at their own pace.

3) Giving satisfaction and a sense of purpose: in the


family setting, the family members enjoy life with each
other through satisfying activities.
4) Ensuring continuity of companionship: in most
cases, family associations that provide sympathetic
companionship and encouragement can be expected
to endure.
5) Providing ,social placement and socialization:
the family serves as the transmitter of culture from
one generation to the next and prepares family
members for their place in the social hierarchy. .
6) Inculcating controls and a sense of what is right:
within the family, members first learn the rules,
rights, obligations and responsibilities characteristic
of human societies.
