Normal Probability Distribution
Distribution
Objectives:
Illustrates a normal random variable and its
characteristics. (M11/12SP-IIIc-1)
a. Define and enumerate the different properties
of normal probability distribution.
b. Find the area between two z values of the
normal curve.
Group recitation
1. The probability of getting a red ace in a well
shuffled deck of playing cards is _____.
1. z = 0. 76
2. z = - 0. 64
3. z = 1. 59
4. z = - 1. 81
5. z = 2.67
6. z = -2. 24
Find the area between:
– z = 0 and z = 0.65
– z = 0 and z = 1.86
– z = 0 and z = - 0.37
– z = 0 and z = -1.58
– z = 0 and z = -2.27
– sketch the normal curve.
1. What do you mean by Normal Probability
Distribution?
A normally distributed random variable having
mean υ=0 and standard deviation σ = 1 is called
a standard normal distribution and it is
associated to normal curve called the standard
normal curve. The random variable with a
standard normal distribution is denoted by the
symbol z.
2. What are the properties of a normal probability
distribution?
a. The normal probability distribution is bell-shaped
curve.
b. The curve is symmetric about its mean.
c. The standard normal curve extends indefinitely in
both directions.
d. The spread of the curve depends on the standard
deviation of the distribution
e. The area under the standard normal curve is 1.
3. How can you find the area of a specific
region under the curve?
The area of specific region under the curve can
be found in the table of areas under the normal
curve by finding the intersection of the row
entries and column entries of z. The rows
indicate the ones and tenth place of a z value
while the columns indicate the hundredth
place of a z value.
Test I. TRUE OR FALSE:
1. The standard normal distribution is also called normal curve.
2. The area under a normal curve is 100.
3. The mean of a standard normal curve is 3.
4. The curve of a normal distribution extends indefinitely at the
tails.
5. The shape of the normal probability distribution is symmetric
about the mean.
Test II. Find the area between two z values of a normal curve and
sketch the drawing of a normal curve.
1. z = 0 and z = 0.85
2. z = 0 and z = 1.34
