Alphanumeric Keys
 These keys comprises of letters of
the alphabet (A to Z), numbers (0
to 9), punctuation signs, and other
symbols.
Modifier Keys
The most frequently used modifier
keys are SHIFT, CTRL, ALT, and ALT
Gr.
A modifier key is a key that modifies
the action of another key when the
two are pressed together.
Special Keys
 They comprises of PRT SCN, ESC,
ENTER, WINDOW , CAPS LOCK,
TABULATION , BACKSPACE,
SPACE BAR keys.
Function Keys
 The function keys are arranged in
a row at the top at the computer
keyboard. They are labeled as F1,
F2, F3, and so on, up to F12.
Movement/
Navigation Keys
 They include the CURSOR or arrow keys (left arrow, right
arrow, up arrow and down arrow), and the navigation keys
(HOME, END, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, DELETE, and
INSERT).
Numeric Keypad
 Arithmetic operators such
as +,-,*, /,Numeric digits 0-

 An indicator is a light or LED that prompts the user to the status of
a hardware device.
Indicator Light  The picture shows the three indicator LEDs on the keyboard.
These lights show whether the num lock, caps lock, or scroll lock
are enable or disabled.
Functions of the Different Keys
Function Keys
 These keys are also call
programmable keys.
 They perform different function in
different software programs.
 For example in most programs the
F1 key can be press to display the
HELP page .
 Modifier keys are special keys that modify the normal
action of another key, when the two are pressed in
Modifier Keys combination. By themselves, modifier keys usually do
nothing.
 SHIFT KEY is a modifier key on a computer keyboard, used to
type capital letters when press in combination with another letter
Modifier Keys keys. 
 Press SHIFT in combination with another key to type the symbol
shown on the `upper` part of that key.
 The ALT KEY on a computer keyboard is used to change
(alternate) the function of other pressed keys when press in
Modifier Keys combination
 For example, Alt+F4 in Microsoft Windows will close the program
in the active window .
 CTRL KEY is use in combination with another key to perform a
specific task.
Modifier Keys  For example, in some programs, pressing Ctrl and S will save a
document.
 Space Bar: it is used to put spaces between words and sentences.
Modifier Keys  Tabulation key:  it is used to ‘push’ the typing along the line in
specified distances.
 WINDOWS LOGO KEY: It is used to quickly display the start menu
Special Keys when using the Windows operating system.
 ESCAPE KEY (ESC): It is used to quit the current task is running. 
 Enter Key: Used to enter commands or to move the cursor to the
Special Keys beginning of the next line.
 Sometimes labelled Return instead of Enter. 
 Backspace key: Deletes the character just to the left of the cursor
(or insertion point) and moves the cursor to that position. 
Special Keys  Caps Lock Key: A toggle key that, when activated, causes all
alphabetic characters to be uppercase. 
 PRINT SCREEN (or PRT SCN): Captures an image of your entire
screen (a “screen shot”) and copies it to the Clipboard in your
Special Keys computer’s memory.
 From there you can paste it (CTRL+V) into Microsoft Paint or
another program and, if you want, print it from that program. 
 SCROLL LOCK (or SCR LK): Changes the behavior of the arrow
keys and the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys; pressing these keys
causes the document to scroll without changing the position of
Special Keys the cursor or selection.
 Your keyboard might have a light indicating whether SCROLL
LOCK is on. 
 PAUSE/Break: This key is rarely used. In some older programs,
Special Keys pressing this key pause the program or, in combination with CTRL,
it stops it from running. 
Navigation  The navigation keys allow you to move the cursor, move
around in documents and edit text.

 INSERT KEY : It turns the Insert mode on or off.

Navigation  When the Insert mode is on, the text that is typed is inserted at the
cursor.
Keys  When the Insert mode is off, the text that is typed replaces
existing characters.
 DELETE KEY: Delete a character after the cursor or delete a
selected text
 PAGE DOWN KEY: Move the cursor or page down one screen

Navigation  PAGE UP KEY: Move the cursor or page up one screen


 CTRL+END: Move to the bottom of a document
Keys  CTRL+HOME: Move to the top of a document
 END: Move the cursor to the end of a line
 HOME: Move the cursor to the beginning of a line
Navigation  LEFT ARROW, RIGHT ARROW, UP ARROW, or DOWN ARROW:
Move the cursor or selection one space or line in the direction of
Keys the arrow or scroll a webpage in the direction of the arrow.
 The numeric keypad is entering numbers, and it is activated
when NUM LOCK (it is a key on the numeric keypad ) is ON.

Numeric  Most keyboards have a light that indicates whether NUM


LOCK is on or off.
Keypad  When NUM LOCK is off, the numeric keypad functions as a
second set of navigation keys (these functions are printed
on the keys next to the numerals or symbols).
