Shear Wall Design

This document provides information on designing shear walls for tall buildings. Shear walls provide high stiffness and strength for lateral and gravity loads and are well-suited for reinforced concrete tall buildings up to around 40 stories. Taller buildings should combine shear walls with other structural systems. The design process involves calculating external loads, checking boundary elements, designing longitudinal and transverse reinforcement, and verifying the shear wall section adequacy. Minimum reinforcement ratios are specified based on the factored shear force. The example provided details the design of two shear walls for a 25 story building, calculating load distribution based on the wall properties and locations.

Shear Wall Design

Introduction
Shear walls provide a
high in-plane stiffness and
strength for both lateral and
gravity loads, and are ideally
suitable for tall buildings,
especially those conceived in
reinforced concrete. Tall
buildings designed to carry the
entire lateral loading through
shear walls can be economical to
heights of around 40 stories.
Taller structures should combine
shear walls with other structural
systems.
