Thodupuzha
Introduction

 Thodupuzha is a municipality in Idukki district


in the Kerala state of India, spread over an area
of 35.43 km2.
 Thodupuzha is 57 km (35 mi) from Kottayam
and 60 km (37 mi) south east of Kochi.
 Thodupuzha is 200 km from the state capital,
Trivandrum.
 The word ‘thodu’ (old Malayalam word) as
‘touch’ and ‘puzha’ as ‘river’. Thus the town
touching the river became Thodupuzha.
History

 The Kings of Vadakkumkoor used to live at Karikode for several years. At the time of King Marthanda
Varma, Vadakkumkoor became part of the state of Travancore. He appointed his representative
'sarvadhikari' Elasamprathi Narayana Varma Thampan of MATTATHIL from Neyyattinkara
(Trivandrum) to flourish Thodupuzha. In the 14th century AD, Kerala was divided for administrative
reasons into several provinces such as Venadu, Otanadu, Navishainadu, Munjunadu, Vempolinadu, and
Keezhmalainadu. Thodupuzha was in Keezhmalainadu which had its headquarters at Karikode.
Keezhmalainadu was in existence until AD 1600. In that year it lost a battle with Vadakkumkoor and
became a part of it. The church at Muthalakodam, a small town, 4 kilometers from Thodupuzha, is
believed to have been constructed before the 13th century. The Ninnar Mosque near Karikode is said to
have been constructed by Sarvadikari Elasmprathi Narayana Varma for his Muslim soldiers.
At the formation of Kerala state in 1956, Thodupuzha was part of the Ernakulam district. In 1972, Idukki
district was formed by merging Thodupuzha taluk along with Devikulam, Udumbanchola and Peermade
taluks, which were part of the erstwhile Kottayam district.

 Thodupuzha is a Municipality city in district of Idukki, Kerala. The Thodupuzha city is divided into 32
wards for which elections are held every 5 years.
 The Thodupuzha Municipality has population of 52,045 of which 25,563 are males while 26,482 are
females as per report released by Census India 2011.

 Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 5182 which is 9.96 % of total population of Thodupuzha
(M). In Thodupuzha Municipality, Female Sex Ratio is of 1036 against state average of 1084.
Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Thodupuzha is around 974 compared to Kerala state average of 964.
Literacy rate of Thodupuzha city is 95.60 % higher than state average of 94.00 %. In Thodupuzha,
Male literacy is around 96.95 % while female literacy rate is 94.29 %.

 Thodupuzha Municipality has total administration over 12,604 houses to which it supplies basic
amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Municipality limits and
impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.
 Thodupuzha Work Profile
 Out of total population, 17,739 were engaged in work or business activity. Of this 13,447 were males
while 4,292 were females. In census survey, worker is defined as person who does business, job,
service, and cultivator and labour activity. Of total 17739 working population, 89.84 % were engaged
in Main Work while 10.16 % of total workers were engaged in Marginal Work.
