Unit 10: Grammar

Reported
Speech
By Shalevska Elena
Reported speech is used to give a report on what
another person said.

When do we use reported speech?

Sometimes someone says a sentence, for example

"I'm going to the cinema tonight". Later, maybe we
want to tell someone else what the first person said.

Here's how it works:

We use a 'reporting verb' like 'say' or 'tell’ in present or

past, then we go “one tense backwards” like:
Reported
Speech Direct:
Reported:
I like pizza, Teo said.
Teo said that he liked pizza.
Reported speech or indirect speech is often used in English.

Though there are some rules that are to be followed,

making sentences in reported speech is really easy.
Tense change

Present Perfect Past Perfect
