1. The universe and the Solar
System
The universe was formed millions
years ago as a result of an explosion,
the Big Bang. The Big Bang was a gigantic
explosion that propelled
matter and energy into space
14 billion
years ago to create galaxies.
3
•The universe is formed of:
• Stars and celestial bodies planets, satellites, asteroids and
comets. They form the galaxies.
• Interestellar matter, dust and gas.
• Empty space

Asteroids
⋆ The univers is made up of galaxies.
⋆ Our Solar System is located in one of these, the Milky Way.
⋆ The Solar System contains the Sun which is a star, eight planets and numerous
celestial bodies that orbit the sun.

2. The Earth
•The Earth is the only planet in the Solar System where there is
life.
•Life is possible because the Earth has three main characteristics:
• The appropriate temperature.
• The atmosphere, a gaseous layer that provides oxygen and
protects life from dangerous solar radiation.
• It has liquid water.

2.1. Rotation
•The way the Earth spins on an imaginary axis from
North to South. It happens every 24 hours.
•The axis of rotation is tilted with respect to the plane
of the orbit.
•Consequences:
-Day and night. The sun’s light only illuminates part of the
Earth’s surface while the rest of the Earth is in darkness.
-The sun’s apparent movement. The sun appears to be rising in
the east and setting in the west.12
13
14
2.1. Revolution
•The way the Earth orbits, following an elliptical orbit, around
the sun.
•It takes the Earth 365 days
and 6 hours to complete a
full revolution. We add an
extra day to the month of
February every four years.
A year with 366 days is
called a leap year.
15
•Consequences:
“
- The seasons. The changing angle of the sun´s rays as they
reach the earth´s surface gives rise to the seasons.
-The lengh of day and night. Due to the tilt of the earth´s axis as
it orbits the sun, each hemisphere is illuminated differently.
-Climate zones. The sun rays reach the Earth surface at different
angles. That’s why different parts of the Earth receive varying
amount of solar energy.
