Conflict Building Measures

Confidence-building measures (CBMs) aim to reduce fear and anxiety between conflicting parties to build confidence and security. CBMs make behaviors more predictable to lessen suspicion and promote open communication, negotiation, and cooperation. Effective conflict resolution relies on effective communication, even when using interpreters from different cultural backgrounds with varying communication styles. Problems can occur when making judgments based solely on differences in communication style.

CONFLICT BUILDING MEASURES
(CBM)
Limiting or reducing the level of fear among parties in conflict
is essential for building confidence and a sense of security.
Confidence-building measures (CBMs) aim to lessen anxiety
and suspicion by making the parties' behavior more
predictable.
Confidence is a psychological state, where by actors make
themselves ready to take risk, openly communicate/ negotiate
based on the expectations of goodwill and positive behavior
from a corresponding person in order to avoid conflict
escalation and consolidate the outcomes. Through CBM,
mediators try to humanize the conflict parties and to break
down the image of rival.
ROLE OF COMMUNICATION
IN CONFLICT
Effective conflict resolution always comes down to
effective communication. In a therapeutic setting,
this remains true even if a violent individual has had
to be restrained.
Individuals have different communication styles,
especially when they come from different cultural
backgrounds – some are more expressive and direct,
others prefer to have their team members or
managers speak for them, rather than voicing their
opinion themselves. Problems occur when
judgments are made on the basis of different
communication styles.

9. Keeping promises
10. Providing answers
11. Acting as an intermediary

13. Identifying and solving problems
14. Having follow-up discussion
15. Seeking an understanding of local condition

TEMPERAMENTS

1. Harmonizer (The Pacifier).

2. Controller (The Bull).
3. Pragmatist (The Street Fighter).
4. Action Seeker (The High Roller).
HARMONIZER (THE PACIFIER).

This is the intuitive-perceiving (N/P)

combination. Characteristic behaviors
include a broad perspective, resistance to
deadlines and pressure. They demonstrate a
general, theoretical, and open-ended
approach. The Pacifier will either make a
poor choice or cause failure of any
resolution.
CONTROLLER (THE BULL).
This is the intuitive-judging (N/J)
combination. Characteristic behaviors
include firmness, decisiveness, a broad
perspective, conceptual theorizing, and
discussion of multiple issues. They
demonstrate a sense of the big picture
combined with resolve. The Bull will become
so rigid that no resolution will be possible.
PRAGMATIST (THE STREET
FIGHTER)
This is the sensing-judging (S/J)
combination. Characteristic behaviors
include a focus on detail and sequence or
order, involving people support, firm
decisiveness, and impatience for resolution.
They demonstrate a focus on detail and a
stubborn resolve. The Street Fighter could
hurt somebody!
ACTION SEEKER (THE HIGH
ROLLER).

This is the sensing-perceiving (S/P)

combination. Characteristic behaviors
include a focus on detail and sequence,
spontaneity, and flexibility. They
demonstrate a detailed approach and some
hyperactivity. The High Roller often loses
big.
