Upss Online Lecture Topic:Mapping and Function Class Ss1:: Subject: Further Mathematics by Akpodamure Fejiro

The document discusses mappings and their components. A mapping assigns each element in a domain set A to a unique element in a codomain set B. The domain is the set A, the codomain is the set B, and the range is the collection of images of the domain elements under the mapping. Mappings can be represented by arrow diagrams or graphs. To identify the domain, codomain, and range, substitute domain elements into the mapping function to find the images. A mapping requires that no domain element maps to two codomain elements. The document provides an example mapping and determines its codomain and range.

Objectives

 At the end of this lesson, you should be able to

 Explain the term mapping
 Find the domain ,codomain and range of a mapping
What is a Mapping?

Given two non empty sets A and B,  the rule which assigns an element a∈A (a
belonging to A) a unique element b∈B  is called a Mapping.
 The mapping  ‘f’ from A to B is denoted by
  f : A → B.

Note
The set A is called the domain, while  the set B is called the co-domain of the
mapping
The range is  a collection of the images of  the elements of the domain.
Representation of mappings

 A mapping can be represented by ;

 1. Arrows diagrams
 2. Parallel axes
 3. Cartesian graphs
How to identify the Domain, codomain
and Range of a Mapping
 In the figure 1 below the domain is the set {a,b,c,d} and the codomain is the
set. { e ,f,g ,h ,I}

 Note the range is the set { e,f g i} because it represents the collections of the
images of the set A
Properties of a mapping

 No element in the domain must have two images in the codomain

 Two different elements in the domain can have same image in the codomain

Figure (a) is a Mapping while figure (b) is not a Mapping

Problem on domain, codomain and
range of a mapping
 Example 1. Let f: A B be a Mapping defined by f(x) = 2x^2 +3 on the set A = { -1, O,1,2,3}.
 1.Find the codomain and range of the mapping
 2. Draw an arrow diagram representation for the mapping
 Solution
 Let. F(x) = 2x^2 +3 …………equation (1)
 Considering the domain A={ -1,0,1,2,3}
 We are to substitute each number in the domain into equation 1.
 When x is -1, f(-1) = 2(-1)^2 +3 = 2+3=5
 When x is O, f(0) = 2(0)^2 +3 = 0+3 =3
 When x is 1 , f(1) = 2(1)^2 +3 = 2+3 =5
 When x is 2, f(2) = 2 (2)^2 +3 = 8+3 =11
 When. X is 3, f(3) = 2(3)^2+ 3 = 18 + 3 =21
 The codomain will be a collection of the set { 3,5,11,21}
 The range is also the set { 3,5,11,21} because it represents all the images of
the domain A
 The arrow diagram representation of the mapping is given by
