Community Service: Secondary and Junior College Department School Year 2020-2021

This document outlines community service projects for the 2020-2021 school year. It discusses 3 past student-led projects: Kids Saving the Rainforest, Hoops of Hope, and Care Bags 4 Kids. The rationale is to provide learners with community service experiences. Projects must adhere to principles of sincere, measurable service within 6 months. Donations alone are not the goal; projects require active student participation. At the end, projects will be highlighted, assessed and exhibited per class. Class coordinators are assigned to each secondary and junior college level.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Secondary and Junior College Department

School Year 2020-2021
Janine Licare and Aislin Livingstone
–
Kids Saving the Rainforest:
they saw the rainforest disappearing
from their beloved home in Costa
Rica…
Austin Gutwein – Hoops of Hope: In
the spring of 2004, Austin Gutwein watched a
video of children who had lost their parents to
AIDS.  Moved to do something to help these kids,
Austin decided to shoot basketball free throws as a
way to raise money on World AIDS Day.
Wignall –
Care Bags 4 Kids:
At eleven years old, Annie Wignall
began the Care Bags Foundation in 2000
when she discovered there are many kids
in crisis situations who have to leave their
homes with very few of their own
belongings.

RATIONALE
In response to the articulated need that is, to provide every learner with the school -based

community service drive or an outreach project experience – the Committee endeavours to

facilitate this goal. Also, cognizant of the fact that every student entrusted to our care must be

exposed into situations that bring forth in them the opportunity and a realisation about genuine

service and sincere care, the committee hopes to bridge this noble goal in a regular, long-term basis

that is measurable and worthwhile.

Points to consider about CS Projects…
.
All Community Projects to be planned must adhere to instilling in ALL students a sense of

sincere, genuine service that is SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, result- oriented and

can be accomplish within the 6 months - time frame).

Points to consider about CS Projects…
.

Note that Community Outreach Projects are NOT just about giving donations or raising money

- but this boils down to the spirit of sincere service to the community through active participation

or involvement in the Project Drive 9this should be made clear and be empahsized with the

students). Please empahasize during the planning that ALL students must be able to actively

involve themselves in the process of helping and working out their projects.
Points to consider about CS Projects…
.

At the end of the Community Service Projects - the

committee will schedule a time to highlight, assess,
showcase and exhibit students’ learning experiences per
class/student.
