1960’s - 69

The 1960s
The End of the Hollywood Studio System
The Era of Independent, Underground
Cinema
Cinema in the 1960s reflected the decade of fun, fashion, rock 'n' roll, tremendous
social changes (i.e., the civil rights era and marches) and transitional cultural values.
This was a turbulent decade of monumental changes, tragedies, cultural events,
assassinations and deaths, and advancements

Look Back in Anger (1959), A Taste of Honey (1961),

and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962)
Room at the Top (1959)
The Caretaker (1963)

A Kind of Loving (1962) and Billy Liar (1963
Doris Day's look has always influenced her
audiences. Classic shirtwaist dresses, full
skirts, crisp blouses, a smartly tailored
ensemble or two and always a pretty
formal gown formed the wardrobe that
became her snappy style signature
staples.  In Young At Heart, she wore a
cardigan appliqued with beaded bows that
set a trend. Not only her wardrobe, but her
coiffures were copied.
The 1960s was a decade that broke many fashion traditions. The mini- skirt was invented. The fashion icon of
the time, Jackie Kennedy, brought forth the French manicure with false eyelashes, and the pillbox hat. Which
became  very popular throughout the 1960s. Bright eyeshadow was also considered popular. Accessories
became less important throughout the 1960s
The '60s also gave birth to the skinny jean, worn by
Audrey Hepburn, which is again popular with young
women today.
Twiggy Fashion
Model and actress Twiggy was one fashion icon who women admired in the 60s and many wanted to copy her
look. She was named "The Face of 1966." Twiggy's signature look was drawn on eyelashes and a heavily made-
up eye. Big, dramatic eyes and a pale face were the sought-after look in makeup in the 60s.
Other style icons of the 1960s included Brigitte Bardot, Natalie Wood, Verushka and Nancy Sinatra
1964 - Beatlemania, the Beatles 'invaded' US
1965 - Miniskirt made first appearance
1966- One Million Years BC made Raquel Welch a sex symbol in a two-piece fur bikini
1967 - "Hair" opened off-Broadway
1967 - Human Be-In (Golden Gate Park), and Summer of Love in San Francisco
Multiplied
1968- "60 Minutes" debuted on CBS-TV
1969 - Woodstock Musical Festival in upper-state New York

1969 - "Sesame Street" debuted on TV

1970’s - 79
The punk look was born thanks to British designer, Vivienne Westwood (think
Gwen Stefani in her film clip for ‘rich girl’).

Women were again wearing baby-doll dresses, pant dresses andwrap dresses.

Disco looks began in the 1970s and was memorable for its hot pants look and
Spandex tops. Shiny clinging Lycra stretch disco pants in hot strident shiny
colours with stretch sequin bandeau tops were often adaptations of professional
modern dance wear that found itself making an impact in discos as disco
dancing became serious. Gold lame, leopard skin and stretch halter jumpsuits
and white clothes that glowed in Ultra Violet lights capture the 70s Disco fashion
perfectly.
Right -70s Disco Fashion - Hotpants 1971
Valerie Harper as Rhoda was a true 1970s fashion icon. She totally rocked high
waist, wide-leg pants, butterfly collar blouses, puff sleeve blazers, floaty hostess
dresses, scarves and turbans! She even earned her living as a window dresser /
fashion merchandiser!
From bell-bottoms to butterfly collars to platform shoes, the '70s gave us some of the flyest fashions. These are
just a few of the people who inspired us to groovy new heights
It’s impossible to talk about 1970s fashion without bringing up the eccentrically dressed bohemian goddess,
Stevie Nicks. With her shaggy blond hair, draped jackets and slouchy boots, Stevie is the quintessential 1970s
style icon that so many of us turn to when needing a little hippie inspiration.
the early 70s were a continuation of the hippie look from the late 60s.  “The
decade began with a continuation of the hippie look from the 1960s. Jeans
remained frayed, and the Tie dye shirts and Mexican peasant blouses were
still popular. In addition to the mini skirt, mid-calf length dresses called "midis"
and ankle-length dresses called "maxis" were also worn in 1970 and 1971,
thus offering women three different skirt lengths.”
No other decade can compete the 1970s clothing as for its variety of styles
and trends. 70’s were even nicknamed ‘the decade of bad taste’…  The 1970s
clothing was varied and eclectic. This decade embraced lots of styles: retro,
ethnic, classical, romantic, folk, gypsy, hippie, military, safari, unisex and so
on.
