Unit - I Spur Gear: by Prof. Surendrasingh Y. Sonaye

The document discusses spur gears, including their definition, classification, terminology, and advantages/disadvantages. Specifically, it defines spur gears as having teeth parallel to the axis of rotation. It also outlines key spur gear terminology like pitch circle, diametral pitch, addendum, dedendum, pitch point, and more. Finally, it notes advantages of spur gears like simplicity and high efficiency, and disadvantages like high impact stresses.

CATEGORIES OF GEARS IN ACCORDANCE
WITH THE ORIENTATION OF THEIR AXIS
SPUR GEAR

•Teeth are parallel to the axis of the gear

•Advantages
Simple in construction
Easy to Manufacture
Highest Efficiency
Excellent Precision rating
Wide Velocity Range
Cost

•Disadvantages
Sudden Loading
High Impact Stresses
Excessive Noise at High Speed
GEAR TERMINOLOGY

• Pinion:
The smaller member of two meshed gears.

• Gear:
The larger member of two meshed gears.

• Pitch Point :
The pitch point is the point where gear teeth actually make
contact with each other as they rotate.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY

Pitch Circle:
The circles remain tangent throughout entire engagement.

Or

The circle, the radius of which is equal to the distance

from the center of the gear to the pitch point.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
•Base Circle:
The circle from which is generated the involute curve upon
which the tooth profile is based.

• Center Distance:
The distance between centers of two gears.

•Circular Pitch:
It is a distance between a point on a tooth at the pitch circle
to corresponding point on the next adjacent tooth P=(p*D)/N
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
• Diametral Pitch, (Pd):
Number of teeth per inch of pitch diameter

• Addendum:
The radial distance between the Pitch Circle and the top
of the teeth.

• Dedendum:
The radial distance between the bottom of the tooth to
pitch circle.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY

• Addendum circle:
A circle bounding the ends of the teeth, in a
normal section of the gear.

• Dedendum circle or Root circle:

The circle bounding the spaces between the
teeth, in a normal section of the gear.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
•Tooth Thickness:
The thickness of the tooth measured along an arc
following the Pitch Circle

•Tooth Space:
The distance between adjacent teeth measured on the
pitch circle.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
• Face:
The working surface of a gear tooth, located between
the pitch diameter and the top of the tooth.

• Flank:
The working surface of a gear tooth, located between
the pitch diameter and the bottom of the teeth.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
• Face Width:
The width of the tooth measured parallel to the gear
axis.

• Top land:
The top surface of a gear tooth.

• Bottom land:
The bottom surface of the tooth space.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
•Clearance:
The difference between the Dedendum of one gear and
the addendum of the mating gear.

•Backlash:
The difference between the tooth thickness of one gear
and the tooth space of the mating gear.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
Contact Ratio:
The ratio of the length of the Arc of Action to the
Circular Pitch.

Module:
Millimeter of Pitch Diameter to Teeth.

Working Depth:
The depth to which a tooth extends into the space
between teeth on the mating gear.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY

• Line of Action:
That line along which the point of contact between
gear teeth travels, between the first point of contact
and the last.

• Pressure Angle:
Angle between the Line of Action and a line
perpendicular to the Line of Centers.
GEAR TERMINOLOGY
• Arc of Action:
Is the arc of the Pitch Circle between the beginning and the end
of the engagement of a given pair of teeth.

• Arc of Approach:
Is the arc of the Pitch Circle between the first point of contact
of the gear teeth and the Pitch Point.

• Arc of Recession:
That arc of the Pitch Circle between the Pitch Point and the last
point of contact of the gear teeth.
