Fetal Circulation

Fetal circulation develops from blood islands containing angioblasts and hemangioblasts that differentiate from embryonic mesoderm. Vascular tubes form a network and connect the blood islands, eventually developing into the umbilical vein and arteries along with three major shunts - the foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus, and ductus venosus - that allow blood to bypass the lungs and circulate between the placenta and fetal organs to exchange gases and nutrients.
