BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S
SYNOPSIS

•In an idealized New York City during the early '60s, Holly
Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) is a charming socialite with a
youthful zest for life who lives alone in a nearly bare apartment.

•She has such a flippant lifestyle that she won't even give her cat
a name, because that would be too much of a commitment to a
relationship.

•She spends her time on expensive dates and at high-class parties

wearing the most perfect designer clothes and accessories from
Givenchy.
•She escorts various wealthy men, yet fails to return their
affections after they have given her gifts and money.
•Holly's carefree independence is changed when she meets her neighbour, aspiring
writer Paul, who is suffering from writer's block while being kept by a wealthy woman.
•Just when Holly and Paul are developing their sweet romance, Doc appears on the
scene and complicates matters, revealing the truth about Holly's past.
•Furious at everything and everyone, Holly kicks Cat out of her taxicab into the rain and
decides to leave town for Brazil, but Paul goes out to find Cat. Holly realizes how much
she is giving up and races through the wet New York streets to a happy reunion with Paul
and Cat.
PROTAGONIST OF THE MOVIE

•Breakfast at Tiffany's is a novella by Truman Capote published in 1958.

•The main character, Holly Golightly, is one of Capote's best-known creations.
•Holly Golightly is played by Audrey Hepburn.
•The ‘60s were Hepburn’s decade, with the release of Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961.
•She influenced the fashion in the 60’s with the costumes she wore in the movie.
•She was considered a fashion icon popularizing certain trends in the 60’s.
HUBERT DE GIVENCHY
•French couturier Hubert de Givenchy is one of the leading
fashion designers of the 20th century.
•Givenchy designed for Audrey in her starring role in Breakfast at
Tiffany's.
•The black Givenchy dress of Audrey Hepburn is a little black
dress designed by Hubert de Givenchy and worn by Audrey
Hepburn in the opening of the 1961 romantic comedy film
Breakfast at Tiffany's.
•Givenchy not only chose the dress for the character in the film,
but also added the right accessories to match the long gown
in the form of a pearl choker of many strands, a foot long
cigarette holder, a large black hat and opera gloves.
The dark oversized sunglasses completed the ensemble
of the little black dress.
FASHION TRENDS POPULARIZED IN THE 60’s
•Audrey Hepburn was a great beauty who was naturally slim, not starved like so many
modern actresses.
•Simple was, in fact, the byword by which Audrey Hepburn lived when it came to her
look. She favoured clean lines and a slim fit in plain colors.
•Many of her clothes were inspired by the look of men's wear, but it all had a distinct
and absolute femininity.
•Some could argue that Audrey Hepburn is the
reason for fashion’s obsession with the Little
Black Dress.

•Her classic Holly Golightly look from Breakfast at

Tiffany’s is one of the most iconic ‘Old Hollywood’
photos out there.

•The simple Givenchy column gown, 3-strand

pearl necklace, large tortoiseshell sunglasses,
sleek updo, diamond earrings, and long cigarette
holder will forever be known as an Audrey
Hepburn-inspired look.
LITTLE ‘NOTHING’ DRESS
•The first visual many people will have when thinking about
Audrey Hepburn and fashion is of her iconic outfit in the film
Breakfast at Tiffany's.
•Wearing a body-skimming, sleeveless black dress worn with
white opera gloves and accessorized with a big hat, sunglasses
and a long cigarette holder, she is the embodiment of
glamour.
•These days, a wise woman would forgo the cigarette holder
and the cigarette, but the rest of the look is timeless and
beautiful.
•Coco Chanel had originated the idea of the little black dress,
that perfect item that every stylish woman had to have, and
Audrey Hepburn showed women how it could continue to be
worn to great effect in a new era.
GLOVES
•Another trend made popular by ’60s style icon Audrey
Hepburn is the gloves.
•Hepburn would often wear gloves that were either
white or black and went up to her elbows in the movie.
•Long, silk gloves were the perfect way for women of
the 1960s to show off their elegance and class.

HEADSCARVES
•Audrey was seen in the movie wearing
headscarves on two occasions.

•Inspired, the fashionable young liked to tie

their headscarf right on the point of the chin,
as opposed to being tied under the chin or a
long scarf could be crossed under the chin,
wrapped around the neck and tied at the
back.
PEARL NECKLACES
•Popularized by Audrey Hepburn in the movie, pearl
necklaces were the ultimate sign of class and glamour
in the 1960s.
•Pearl necklaces made women of the time feel elegant
and trendy, especially since so many women followed
the styles of Hepburn.

OVERSIZED SUNGLASSSES
•Oversized sunglasses were popularized by Audrey
Hepburn in this movie.

•In the 1960s it was a way for women to feel

glamorous or just as a way to hide as much of
their face from the sun as possible.
AUDREY HEPBURN HAIR
•One is the massive, "pineapple" updo style she sported to such memorable effect at
the beginning of the film Breakfast at Tiffany's which immediately got popular in the
60’s.

•The beehive is one of the enduring symbol of the early 1960s – a distinctively hive-
shaped, backcombed and lacquered mountain of hair that would last for many days
sported by Hepburn. This elegant updo was incredibly popular worn by the masses
and the famous alike.
OVERSIZED HATS
•Audrey Hepburn was a fan of hats.

•The Chapeu du Matin was featured on Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, paired with her
oversized sunglasses and pearl earrings.

•Adding to the effect is the overly long silk scarf tied around the hat’s base.

•This Audrey Hepburn hat has proven desirable for many women and to this day is
considered to be quite fashionable.
CONCLUSION
•The movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s brought in a lot of trends portrayed by Holly Golightly
played by Audrey Hepburn.

•She also popularised many ongoing trends which became an instant hit.

•She was a fashion icon in the 1960’s and many women tried copying her.
