Computer hardware includes input, output, and storage devices as well as internal components. Common input devices include keyboards, mice, joysticks, light pens, trackballs, and scanners. Output devices display or print the processed information from the CPU and include computer screens, printers, plotters, speakers and projectors. There are different types of printers such as dot matrix, inkjet, laser, bubble jet, and thermal printers used to print documents on paper.

Computer Hardware

Hardware are the physical and tangible


components of a computer.
Example of hardware are: inputs, output,
secondary storage devices and internal
components.
Input Devices
keyboard
This is the most common input device which
help to input data into the computer .
It has a layout of traditional typewriter and
some special purpose keys.
Keyboards are of two types:
1. 84 keys or 101/102 keys
2. 104 keys or 108 keys
Keys and Description
 Typing keys: they includes the letter keys (A-
Z) and digit keys (0-9)
 Numeric keypad: it is use to enter the

numeric data or cursor movement. It consist


of 17 keys
 Function keys : they are twelve function keys

on the keyboard which are arranged in a row


at the top of the keyboard. Each key has
special purpose.
Keys and description
 Control keys : these provide cursor and
screen control. It includes four directional
arrow keys, control keys also include Home,
Insert, Delete, Page up, Page down, Control,
Escape etc.
 Special purpose keys : special keys are Enter,

Shift, Caps lock, Num lock, Space bar etc.


Input Devices
Mouse
It is a pointing device and a cursor control
device with a small size box with round ball at
it base, which senses movements. It has two left
buttons and right button and a wheel in
between the buttons. It is easy to use , not very
expensive.
Input device
Joystick
Joystick is an input device consisting a stick
that pivots on a base and report its angle or
direction to the device it is controlling. It is use
to control video games and computer Aided
Designing (CAD).
Input devices
Light pen
A handheld pen-like photosensitive device held
to the display screen of a computer terminal for
passing information to the computer.
Inputs devices
Track ball
A track ball is a computer cursor control device
used in many notebook and laptop computers.
Track balls comes in various shapes like a ball,
a button or a square.
Scanner.
 A scanner is an input device, which works
more like a photocopy machine. It is used
when some information is available on paper
it is used to be transferred to the hard disk of
the computer manipulations.
 Examples of scanners
Hand and digital scanners.
Output devices.
 These are pieces of equipment that translates
the processed information from the CPU into
a form that you can understand and see.
 A computer screen is the most common out

device, it displays your work.


 Printers are used to crate an output result on

paper.
 Other output devices are ;
 Plotters, speakers, projectors etc.
PRINTERS.
 PRINTERS ARE OUTPUT DEVICES THAT PRINT
THE RESULT OF AN OPERATION ON PAPER .
 PRINTING IS THE FINAL STAGE IN CREATING A

DOCUMENT. THAT IS THE PURPOSE YOUR


PRINTERS JOIN TO YOUR COMPUTING
EQUIPMENT.

 Bubble Jet
 Thermal Printer
 Image Setters
 Plotters
DOT MATRIX
 THIS IS A TYPE IMPACT PRINTER THAT USES
PINS TO PRINT THE DOTS REQUIRED TO
SHAPE A CHARACTER. THEY PRINT TEXT ,
GRAPHICS ETC, SOME OF THEM CAN PRINT UP
FIVE HUNDRED CHARACTERS PER SCONDS.
