Lesson 5 Second and Third Conditional

This document provides an overview of using conditionals in arguments. It discusses the structure and examples of second conditional sentences, which express unrealistic or unlikely future outcomes using the simple past tense in the if-clause and an auxiliary modal verb in the main clause. Third conditional sentences are also covered, using the past perfect tense in the if-clause and modal auxiliary verb plus perfect infinitive in the main clause to discuss how present circumstances would be different if something different had happened in the past. Examples are given for both types of conditional sentences.

Lesson 5: Conditionals

• Second Conditional Sentences

• Third Conditional Sentences

Second Conditional

Second conditional sentences are useful for

expressing outcomes that are completely unrealistic
or will not likely happen in the future.

Examples:

• If I inherited a billion dollars, I would travel to the

moon.

• If I owned a zoo, I might let people interact with

the animals more.

Two Uses:
First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are
probably not going to be true. Maybe I'm imagining some dream for
example.

•If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won't win the lottery)

•If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.

•She would travel all over the world if she were rich.

•She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never studies, so this won't

happen)

Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present which is

impossible, because it's not true. Is that clear? Have a look at the
examples:

•If I had his number, I would call him. (I don't have his number now, so
it's impossible for me to call him).

•If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

Notice the correct way to structure second conditional sentences is to use the simple past
tense in the if-clause and an auxiliary modal verb (e.g., could, should, would, might) in the
main clause (the one that expresses the unrealistic or unlikely outcome). The following
sentences illustrate a couple of the common mistakes people make when using the second
conditional:

Modal auxiliary verbs

-are used to show a necessity, capability,
willingness, or possibility
Examples:
•Can •Ought
•Could •Shall
•May •Should
•Might •Will
•Must •Would

Third Conditional

• Third conditional sentences are used to explain that

present circumstances would be different if
something different had happened in the past.
English 9: ANGLO-AMERICAN LITERATURE I FIRST GRADING I Online Lecture Series

Examples:

• If you had told me you needed a ride, I would

have left earlier.

• If I had cleaned the house, I could have gone to

the movies.

Note that when using the third conditional, we use the past perfect (i.e., had + past
participle) in the if-clause. The modal auxiliary (would, could, should, etc.) + have + past
participle in the main clause expresses the theoretical situation that could have happened.

discussing known factors or hypothetical situations and
