Information Systems Modeling

This document discusses different types of models used in information systems modeling. It describes two main types of models: structural models that emphasize system organization, and behavioral/relational models that reflect system dynamics. It also mentions purposes of modeling include visually demonstrating a system's structure, behavior, and architecture to simplify, optimize, and minimize the developed information system. Finally, it provides examples of different modeling approaches like information, computer, mathematical, and logical modeling.

Discipline «Fundamentals of Information Systems»
Lecture 5
Model: definition and types

 Model - simplified presentation of reality.

 There are 2 types of models:
 structural, emphasizing the system

organization(for example class diagram, object

diagram), and
 Behavioral or relational, reflecting the system

dynamics (use case diagram, activity diagram).

model
 Model always includes only essential
elements which affect the results, and
doesn’t include non-essential elements, that
do not affect the results.
PURPOSE of Models
Models allow to visually demonstrate
the desired system structure and behavior
and its architecture
and in this way to simplify, optimize and
minimize the developed IS.
Modeling: definition
construction of real things, processes or phenomena in an
abstract form for the purpose of their study, explanation,
and prediction.
Kinds of Modeling
 Information modeling
 Computer modeling
 Mathematical modeling
 Logical modeling
 Imitational modeling
 Evolutionary modeling and etc.
Computer modeling
 A computer model is created by abstraction from a
concrete original object.
 Computer modeling consists in a series of experiments on
computer for analysis, interpretation and comparison of
modeling results and if needed, modification of the model.
 It is an effective method of complex information systems
analysis.
The main stages of computer modeling
are:
1. statement of the problem, or identification of
the object of modeling;
2. development of the model concept, its main
elements and their relationships;
3. formalization of the model, or transition to the
mathematical model, algorithm construction and
program development;
4. planning and conduct of computer experiments;
5. analysis and interpretation of the results of
modelling.
