Lines, Rays, and Angles

Standards we will be covering

• CCSS.Math.Content.4.G.A.1
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse),
and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-
dimensional figures.
Objective: Students will be able to identify:
Point Right Angle
Line Obtuse Angle
Ray Straight Angle
Line Segment
Parallel Line
Perpendicular Line
Angle
Vertex
Acute Angle
Lines
A point is an exact location in space
A line is a straight path of points that continues without end in both
directions
A ray is a part of a line with one end point and continues without end
in one direction
A line segment is a part of a line between two endpoints
Parallel lines are lines that do not intersect at any point
Perpendicular lines are lines that meet at a right angle
Angles
An angle is formed by two rays or line segments that have the same
end points
The shared end point is called the vertex
An acute angle measures less than 90 degrees
A right angle measures 90 degrees
An obtuse angle measures more than 90 degrees but less than 180
degrees
A straight angle measures 180 degrees
Lines and Angles
Summary
Lines and angles are all around us. A road is a set of parallel lines.
Some roads cross others making perpendicular intersections. We can
find different angles in buildings and in our own homes!
Understanding lines and angles is important in our Geometric
journey. Look around you with your Geometry eyes and see what
lines and angles you can find!
Check for Understanding
Find something in your home that has
lines, angles, or both. Tell me what kind of
lines and angles you see. Are they parallel
or perpendicular? What kind of angles did
you notice?

Here’s what I took a picture of. This clock

shows an acute angle and an obtuse angle.
What other types of angles can the hands of
a clock make?
