CHE332 - Introduction To Environmental Engineering CHAPTER 1 - Introduction

This document provides an introduction to an environmental engineering course, including the course and lesson outcomes. It defines environmental sciences and engineering as applying engineering principles to protect the environment, public health, and welfare. It also defines environmental chemistry and lists example environmental indicators and chemical processes like the nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen cycles. It discusses environmental chemicals, units of concentration like g/L and M, and environmental policy goals around protecting air, water, waste management, and natural resources.

CHE332 – Introduction To Environmental

Engineering
CHAPTER 1 – Introduction

MOHAMMAD BIN ABDULLAH

Course outcome
• By the end of this chapter, student should be
able to :

Develop an awareness of professional

responsibility towards protecting the
environment (CO1)
Lesson Outcome
The student should be able to:
• Define and explain the concept of
environmental sciences and engineering.
• Discuss environmental chemical pocesses.
• Identify environmental chemicals.
• List unit of concentration.
• Discuss environmental policy.
Environmental Sciences and Engineering

• Environmental engineering is
the application of engineering
principles to the protection
and enhancement of the
– quality of the environment
– public health and welfare.
• Environmental Science
is the study of the environment,
its biotic and abiotic components
and their inter relationships.
Environmental Chemical Processes
Definition
• Environmental chemistry is the scientific study of the
chemical and biochemical phenomena that occur in natural
places.

• Environmental chemistry is the study of chemical processes

occurring in the environment which are impacted by
humankind's activities. These impacts may be felt on a local
scale, through the presence of urban air pollutants or toxic
substances arising from a chemical waste site, or on a global
scale, through depletion of stratospheric ozone or global
warming.
Environmental Chemical Processes
Example of environment indicators:
• Chemical measures of water quality include
dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen
demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand
(BOD), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH,
nutrients (nitrates and phosphorus), heavy
metals, soil chemicals, (including copper, zinc,
cadmium, lead and mercury), and pesticides
Environmental Chemical Processes
• Natural chemical process and phenomena in
environment such as :
 Nitrogen cycle
 Carbon cycle
 Oxygen cycle
Nitrogen Cycle
Carbon Cycle
Oxygen cycle
Environmental Chemical Processes
Example :
Water
Oceans
Chemical Process -
composition,
desalination
Freshwater
Chemical Process
-BOD, COD, oxygen,
water treatment

Unit of Concentration
Unit of Concentration

• Definition : Concentration -
• Concentration refers to the amount of a substance per defined space.
Another definition is that concentration is the ratio of solute in a solution to
either solvent or total solution.
• Concentration usually is expressed in terms of mass per unit volume.
However, the solute concentration may also be expressed in moles or units
of volume. Instead of volume, concentration may be per unit mass.

• While usually applied to chemical solutions, concentration may be calculated

for any mixture.

• Two related terms are concentrated and dilute. Concentrated refers to

chemical solutions that have high concentrations of a large amount of solute
in the solution. Dilute solutions contains a small amount of solvent
compared with the amount of solvent. If a solution is concentrated to the
point where no more solute will dissolve in the solvent, it is said to be
saturated.
Quiz ???
• List unit of concentration:
Unit of Concentration
• Unit Examples of Concentration: g/cm3, kg/l,
M, m, N, kg/L
Environmental Policy
• Environmental policy refers to the commitment
of an organization to the laws, regulations, and
other policy mechanisms concerning
environmental issues.
• These issues generally include air and water
pollution, solid waste management, biodiversity,
ecosystem management, maintenance of
biodiversity, the protection of natural resources,
wildlife and endangered species.
