THE DIFFERENT

MEDIA OF THE VISUAL

ARTS

DEPT. OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY- MAIN CAMPUS
A. Graphic or Two-Dimensional Arts
•Drawing
- Fundamental skill needed in the
visual arts.
- maybe a study which is made for the
sake of learning how to execute
some forms; sketch which shows the
general organization or a design of a
product being planned.
These are the different media for
drawing:
•Pencils
•Ink
•Pastel
•Charcoal
•Paper
1. Pencils
•This is a made of graphite
which comes in different
hardness from soft to hard or
thickness from thick to needle-
like, making possible a wide
range of values.
Regardless of the brand are
usually labelled 2B, 4B, 6B
which indicates the softness of
the lead.
•Graphite pencils are capable of
producing different kinds of lines
and a variety of tones depending
on the sharpness of the pencil
point, the pressure applied on
paper by the artist and the angle
of the pencil as it is held by the
artist.
Shading Techniques:
HATCHING
•Drawing
series of thin
parallel lines
that run in the
sum direction .
Shading Techniques:
CROSS-HATCHING
•Drawing series of
thin parallel lines
and criss-crossing it
with another set of
thin parallel lines.
This creates a tone
that is darker than
hatching.
Shading Techniques:
STIPPLING
•Using the sharp
point of the
pencil to make
dot patterns to
create depth in
some parts of
the drawing.
Shading Techniques:
BLENDING
•Accomplished by
using the finger
or paper stump
to gradually
change the tone
from dark to
light.
2. Ink
•One of the oldest material
for drawing that is still in
use.
•Pen and ink drawings are
characterized by controlled
and uniform lines.
3. Pastel
•This is composed of dry pigment held
together by a gum binder and
compressed into sticks.
•There are 3 kinds of pastel: soft pastel,
hard pastel, and oil pastel.
•When the pastel work is finished, the
drawing must be sprayed with a fixative
to prevent the pigment for rubbing off
and destroying the work.
Pastel Techniques:
STIPPLING
•Using pastel of
different colors
to produce
small marks,
thus, creating a
pattern.
Pastel Techniques:
FEATHERING
•Using the point
of the pastel to
make parallel
strokes creating
a feather –like
effect.
Pastel Techniques:
SCUMBLING
•It is like layering
but using pastel.
The side of the
pastel is lightly
drawn on top of an
existing color but
still making the
color of the first
layer visible.
Pastel Techniques:
IMPASTO
•The technique of
thickly applying
the pastel by
pressing it hard
on the on the
paper creating an
opaque effect.
Pastel Techniques:
SGRAFITTO
• Is applying a thick deposit of pastel on the support
then using a blunt pen, scrapes it off to reveal the
underlying color and create a design. This technique
works beautiful for oil pastel.
4. Charcoal
•This an organic
medium that comes
from the burnt
wood.
5. Paper
•An organic material
made from wood, grass
and linen rags. The most
common surface used in
two-dimensional art.
Painting
•Described as the art of
creating beautiful effects
on a flat surface(paper,
cloth, canvass, wood or
plaster).
The following are the different media used for
painting:

•Water color
•Gouache
•Oil paints
•Tempera
•Fresco
•Acrylic
Water color
•The pigments are
mixed with water
and applied to
paper.
Gouache
•The pigment has been
mixed with water and
added with a chalk-like
material to give it an
opaque effect.
Oil Paints
•The pigments are
mixed with oil as
its binder.
Tempera
•This is pigment
mixed with egg
yolk.
Fresco
•This is pigment
mixed with water
and applied on a
portion of the wall
with wet plaster.
Acrylic
•This medium is widely used
by contemporary painters.
This is a modern medium of
synthetic paint using acrylic
emulsion as binder.
Mosaic
Are wall or floor decorations
made of small tiles or
irregularly cut pieces of
colored stones or glass
called tesserae.
Collage
•Technique of making an art work
by gluing or pasting on a firm
support materials or found
objects.
•How the pieces are arranged
reflect the message that the
artist wants to convey.
Printmaking
•This is a process used
for making
reproductions of
graphic works.
Relief Printing(Raised)
•The oldest method of
printmaking.
•Wood cut and wood
engraving uses this
technique.
Intaglio Printing (Depressed)
•This technique is the
opposite of relief printing;
instead of using the surface
of the plate for image, the
lines of the image are cut or
incised to a metal plate.
Surface Printing (Flat)
•This includes all
processes in which
printing is done from a
flat surface.
Thank you! 

•“The only thing that stands between

you and your dream is the will to try
and the belief that it is actually
possible. So, do it NOW. Sometimes
later becomes NEVER!”
