Synchronous Motor Drives: Dr. S. Elango Associate Professor Department of EEE Coimbatore Institute of Technology

This document discusses speed control methods for synchronous motor drives. It describes true synchronous mode which controls speed by varying the frequency of the power supply in proportion to the desired speed. It also discusses self-controlled mode. Graphs show the speed-torque curves of a synchronous motor with variable frequency control. The document notes that operating at a constant voltage-to-frequency ratio maintains constant pull-out torque at all speeds and that torque varies inversely with speed. It also describes some effects of using different control voltages and currents on torque.

Speed Control:

2. Self Controlled Mode

Observations:
• For all syn motors, the operations at constant v/f ratio maintains a
constant pull out torques at all speeds both during motoring and braking.
• The pull out torques varies inversely with speed.
• In case of wound field motors, an increase in field current increase the pull
out torques for all speeds, below and above base speed.
• If the 6 step VSI is used, the harmonic content increases, because of the
low impedance of the damper winding.
• The harmonic will cause losses and torque pulsations.
• The harmonic current scan be reduced by increasing the impedance of the
damper windings which leads to less effective during hunting period.
• Because of the hunting and stability problems, the true syn mode is
employed only in multiple syn reluctance and permanent magnet motor
drives requiring accurate speed tracking between the motors.
