Principal moment of Inertia (IUU & IVV):
The moment of inertia of an area about its principal axes are known as principal moment of
inertia.
The bending moment about any other axis (except principal axes) in known as UNSYMMETRICAL
BENDING.

y
tan 2Ɵ = 2Ixy / (Iyy – Ixx) U
IUU = {0.5*(Ixx+Iyy)} + {0.5*(Ixx-Iyy)sec 2Ɵ}
Ɵ
IVV = {0.5*(Ixx+Iyy)} - {0.5*(Ixx-Iyy)sec 2Ɵ} V
IUU + IVV = Ixx + Iyy

Ɵ
U = x cos Ɵ + y sin Ɵ
V = y cos Ɵ – x sin Ɵ x
MUU = M sin Ɵ
MVV = M cos Ɵ

Principal axis tan2Ɵ = (2Ixy) / (Iyy-Ixx)

Ixx = 2172442mm4
Iyy = Ixx = 2172442mm4
Ixy = -1273125mm4

tan2Ɵ = (2Ixy) / (Iyy-Ixx)

Ɵ = 45 deg. (inclination of principal axes with respect to the x- axis)

σz @ A (-29.58, 70.42mm)= 13.95N/mm2

σz @ B (-29.58, -29.58mm)= 12.33N/mm2
σz @ C (70.42, -29.58mm)= 3.07N/mm2

Deflection, δ = (δxx2 + δyy2)0.5

δxx = WL3 / 48EIxx

δ yy = WL3 / 48EIyy

Deflection, δ = 1.1425mm

tan α = (MyIxx – MxIxy) / (MxIyy – MyIxy)

“α" is positive xNA and yNA are of opposite sign

Neutral axis, α = -75.37 deg. With

respect to x-axis

α = -75.37 deg.

Topic 8: Analysis of
Unsymmetrical Bending of
Beams – Neutral Axis method
In case of neutral axis
method, resultant stress should
be zero. The equation of
neutral axis is obtained by
substituting the value of σz
equal to zero and found the
angle of inclination of the
neutral axis.
tan α = (MyIxx – MxIxy) / (MxIyy – Fifth lesson summary
