Fundamentals and Applications of GIS
Basic Theme and Data Visualization
Desktop GIS
• Mapping software that is installed onto and
runs on a personal computer and allows users
to display, query, update, and analyze data
about geographic locations and the
information linked to those locations.
Web GIS
• As you might know Web GIS is a GIS system that uses web
technologies. It often uses web technologies to communicate
among different components of the system. Web GIS
originates from a combination of web technology and the
Geographical Information System, which is a recognized
technology that is mainly composed of data handling tools for
storage, recovery, management and analysis of spatial data
Web GIS is a kind of distributed information system. The
simplest architecture of a Web GIS must have at least one
client and one server that client is a desktop application or
web browser application that allows users to communicate
with server, and the server is a web server application.
Internet GIS
• Web GIS is a close term to Internet GIS. These two words are
always used as synonymous with each other. There is a slight
difference between these two words. The Internet supports
many services with the Web being one of these services. So we
can call a system as Internet GIS if it uses many of services of
Internet not only Web service and if it uses only Web we should
name it Web GIS. This definition makes Internet GIS boarder
than Web GIS. In real world Web is the most attractive service
of Internet and it is why Web GIS is more common than
Internet GIS.
GIS Forms
Virtual Globes
• A virtual globe is a three-dimensional (3D)
software model or representation of the Earth
or another world. A virtual globe provides the
user with the ability to freely move around in
the virtual environment by changing the
viewing angle and position.
GIS Developer System
• GIS developers typically work as part of a team of software
developers to develop GIS applications and tools and maintain
software programs to support the needs of the company and/or
clients. Additional tasks may include analyzing land and aerial
imagery or using databases to create specialized maps, such as
weather, seismic, or population-based maps. Developers may also
help clients interpret data, identify trends, and highlight patterns.
• GIS developers also provide technical support on GIS programs.
They maintain and troubleshoot existing systems, as well as
upgrading software. Additional duties can involve project
development, management, and budgeting. Many of the GIS
developer's work hours might be spent sitting at a desk and a
computer.
Mobile GIS
Mobile GIS extends the traditional indoor GIS manipulation to
the outdoor work and provides a mobile outdoor operation
platform for field surveyors to collect, modify, and measure
the spatial data in an easy and effective way. Supergeo
uniquely offers complete GIS product selections to satisfy the
field surveyors who have various needs and to assist them in
diverse survey tasks

Mobile GIS is a means of geo-data collection using GNSS positioning, GIS

functionality, wireless connection and mapping, all integrated in one compact
device. In tandem with this month’s product survey (page 28), the author gives a
detailed outline of the technical and business features of mobile GIS systems.

SuperServ
integrating GIS and GPS technologies is a mobile GIS system for surveying field
data, which works on mobile devices with Android OS. The main functions include
data collection, orientation, map display and waypoint guidance.
