Proponent of Essentialism

WILLIAM C. BAGLEY
> Founder of
Essentialist
Educational theory.

> Emphasizes rigorous

teacher-centered
education vs. child-
centered education.
ESSENTIALISM
> Is the educational theory and educational
philosophy, whose followers believe that
students should learn traditional basic
subjects thoroughly.

> Is the view that every entity has a set of

attributes that are necessary to its identity and
function.
ESSENTIALISM
> In early Western thought, Plato's idealism
held that all things have such an
"essence"—an "idea" or "form".

> For essentialists, education involves the

learning of basic skills, arts and science.
After the learning of these skills and
subjects, students can function as a member
of civilized society.
ESSENTIALISM

> Essentialists argue that classrooms should

be teacher-oriented. The teacher should
serve as an intellectual and moral role
model for the students.
ESSENTIALISM

> Essentialists hope that when students leave

school, they will not only possess basic
knowledge and skills, but they will also
have disciplined, practical minds, capable
of applying lessons learned in school in the
real world.

PROGRESSIVISM
> Education comes from the experience of the
child.

> Learning by doing

LEARNING BY DOING
> It is a hands-on approach to learning

> Students must interact with their

environment in order to adapt and learn.

Proponent of Progressivism
JOHN DEWEY
(Father of progressive
education)

> Children should

experience
democratic
classroom
environment.
Democratic Classroom Environment
> Involving students on a regular basis and in
developmentally appropriate ways, in
shared decision making that increases their
responsibility for helping to make the
classroom a good place to be and learn.

> Students voice and ideas are valued the

most.
Progressivism is
Student-centered
Progressivism Teacher
> The facilitator
> The director of learning
> Guide
> A collaborative partner to the students
In the Classroom
John Dewey wanted the students to:
> Work on hands-on projects so learning
would take place, rather than memorization.
> Exercise their brain by problem solving and
think critically, resulting in learning.

This allows individuals’ brain to develop, so as

the individual grows learning becomes easier.
Social
Reconstructionism
Social Reconstructionism
> Also called Critical Theory or Critical
Pedagogy

> Is an offshoot of Pragmatism and

Progressivism

> Is concerned with addressing social

questions with passion in order to create a
better society and worldwide democracy.
Social Reconstructionism
> Its goal is to assist students with
recognizing oppressive authorities and
systems, and with overcoming these
conditions.

> A philosophy that emphasizes the

addressing of social questions and a quest to
create a better society and worldwide
democracy
Social Reconstructionism
> Reconstructionist educators focus on a
curriculum that highlights social reform as
the aim of education

Proponent of Social
Reconstructionism
Theodore Brameld

> Born at the turn of the

20th century

> Was the first to publicly

support the Social
Reconstructionist theory
of education

Proponent of Social
Reconstructionism
Theodore Brameld

> Believed that schools

should be the biggest
proponent of social
change in the world
Importance on Education

Curriculum of Social Reconstructionists

focuses on the student experience, is student
centered, and attempts to take on real problems
of the world: hunger, violence, oppression, and
inequality. To accomplish this, and to handle
controversial issues, there is a focus on inquiry,
dialogue, and perspectives.
Importance on Education

It is often seen as opposed to “traditional

schooling” which is seen as part of a
disenfranchising system. Critical Theory seeks
to cause students to ‘unlearn’ what they have
learned and to reflect, with an emphasis on
thinking critically, and to re-evaluate these
systems. Through sharing and empathy,
students invent, and reinvent, the world.
