Transmission Line Safety and Reliability

This document discusses several important aspects of transmission line safety and reliability: 1) Right of way areas are created around underground transmission lines to prohibit access during construction or repairs. 2) Armor insulation and danger signs should be used to warn people of underground power lines when digging to prevent electric shocks. 3) Sufficient gap structures between transmission lines and trees or buildings are needed, as electricity can travel through nearby objects to the ground.

TRANSMISSION LINE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY

• Right of way design : The margin area created specifically to be prohibited to pass by as there is underground
transmission lines across the area under construction/broken/repair.
• Armour insulation should be equipped just in case if there’s a person dig up the underground power line
without noticing.
• Underground power lines can also be hazardous during digging works. An operator not armed with
appropriate PPE may mistakenly come in contact with the conductor causing a deadly electric shock. A
danger signs also must be put up to warn the locals.
• Gap structures : Create a specific distance between the transmission line path and nearby tress or houses.
Electricity seeks all paths to the ground. That path might include a nearby tree, mobile equipment, or the
human body. The earth itself could become energized for some distance around your unit.
• Arcing : A dangerous conditions related to the release of energy due to electric arc. It occurs when
accidentally a conductive object or body comes too close with the highly energized conductor causing an arc
to produce at the points of contact.
MORPHOLOGICAL CHART

• It is essential to know cable construction, characteristics, and ratings to understand problems

related to cable systems.

• Cables can be used for outdoor or indoor installations depending upon the distribution
system and the load served.

• Conductors can be arranged to form single-conductor or three-conductor cable. There are

certain advantages and disadvantages to both types of arrangements. Single conductors are
easier to install, easier to splice, and allow the formation of multiple-cable circuits.

• Cable insulation and finish covering is normally based on the type of installation, ambient
operating temperature, service conditions, type of load served, and other criteria as
applicable
