Design Thinking
Business Communication
But how are the two
connected?
Design Thinking
The Design Thinking process
has three main stages:
•Problem Framing
•Ideation
•Prototyping & Test
PROBLEM FRAMING
Problem Framing
THE 4 W’s QUESTION TO ANSWER
◦ Who is affected?
-Experience
◦ What is the problem?
-Struggles, task needed to be accomplished, pain point to be relieved
◦ Where Does it happen?
-context in which the user is experiencing the problem, is it physical or
digital space, involved.
◦ Why does it matter?
-worth solving, values it brings to user, values brings to the business.
THE FINAL PROBLEM STATEMENT
(DEFINE)
A Live Example.
IDEATE
IDEATE
Ideation is the mode of the design thinking process in which
you concentrate on idea generation.
You ideate in order to transition from identifying problems to
creating solutions for your users.
Ideation is your chance to combine the understanding you
have of the problem space and people you are designing for with
your imagination to generate solution concepts.
QUICK EXCERCISE:
◦ Suppose we have a A4 sheet and there are
30 circles drawn in it. You have 2 minutes to
transform each into any recognizable items
like ; a small boll , planet , bicycle wheel,
coin , etc (you are allowed to drawn
OUTSIDE the line of circle).
◦ At the end of 2 min , you will find 30
different ideas that emerged within this
short span of time.
Characteristics for successful ideation
.
.
How do ideate help us?
Ask the right questions and innovate with a strong focus on your users, their needs, and your
insights about them.
Step beyond the obvious solutions and therefore increase the innovation potential of your solution.
Bring together perspectives and strengths of your team members.
◦ Uncover unexpected areas of innovation.
Create volume and variety in your innovation options.
Get obvious solutions out of your heads, and drive your team beyond them.

PROTOTYPE AND
TESTING
What is Prototyping and Testing?
◦ After we are done with the process of Problem framing and ideation. Then come an important part of
design thinking, viz. prototyping and testing.
◦ This method involves producing and early, inexpensive and scaled down version of the product in order
to reveal any existing problems in the current design by testing it with a select few users.
◦ In order to make this step successful, when the people involved are able to interact fully with the
prototype.
◦ An interaction of our users with the prototype, it drives a deeper empathy and it further leads to a
successful solution.
Types of Prototyping?
◦ Low Fidelity Prototyping: In this type of prototyping, we use:
Basic models and/or examples.
Introduce our product with basic features.
We use methods like storyboarding, sketching, card sorting, and wizard of oz.
◦ The test mode is an iterative mode in which you place low-resolution prototypes in the
appropriate context of your user’s life.
◦ Prototype as if you know you’re right, but test as if you know you’re wrong
Test – Feedback capture matrix
• real-time capture of feedback on presentations and prototypes
• arranges thoughts and ideas into four categories for easy assessment
• Fill in the matrix as you give or receive feedback.
• 1st quadrant: Constructive criticism
• 2nd quadrant: Place things one likes or finds notable
• 3rd quadrant: Questions raised
• 4th quadrant: new ideas spurred
