Topic 4: Buckling of a simply-supported plate under compressive edge loading

This case corresponds roughly to

that of a pin-ended ‘Euler’ column
buckling under axial compressive
loading.
The elastic buckling load is given by

BUCKLING OF A SIMPLY-SUPPORTED PLATE UNDER
COMPRESSIVE EDGE LOADING

Plates may be subjected to in-plane loading - “ Uniform stress distribution membrane”.

Membrane action – in plane loading (curvature and slope)

Plate bending – Plates mid surface does not experience appreciable stretching or
contraction.

In-plane loads cause stretching and or contraction of mid surface.

Simplest form of Plate Buckling – Simply supported plate
under compressive edge loading

A thin plate will buckle in

different varieties of modes
depending upon its dimensions,
the loading and methods of
support.

The simplest form of buckling

occurs when the plate is loaded
as shown in figure.

Simplest form of Plate Buckling – Simply supported plate
under compressive edge loading
It behaves like a pin-ended
column (2 sides of simply
supported edge).

Euler theory to find the critical

load – equations are followed.

Once the critical load is

achieved, the plate will incapable
of supporting further load.

BUCKLING OF A SIMPLY-SUPPORTED PLATE UNDER
COMPRESSIVE EDGE LOADING

The variation of K with aspect ratio, a/b, is shown in the graph (previous
slide) for various numbers of buckle waves.

It can be seen that the minimum value of K is 4, and this occurs whenever
the plate length a, is n x b, the plate width. Thus a long plate prefers to buckle
into roughly square segments as shown in the figure (next slide).
