Nanotechnology:: Its Risks

The document discusses the risks of nanotechnology. The main risks discussed are toxicity when nanoparticles are inhaled or enter the environment. Studies show that minor changes in a nanoparticle's chemical structure can significantly change its properties and toxicity. Full risk assessments are needed to evaluate potential human health and environmental impacts at all stages of developing nanotechnology. Life-cycle risk assessments are also important to consider.

NANOTECHNOLOGY
Nanotechnology:
Its Risks
Just like a coin having two sides,
nanotechnology has its benefits and risks.
A handful of studies about these risks
revealed that the most crucial issues
relayed to nanotechnology are toxicity
and exposure to humans and the
environment.
According to Zhang et al., (2011), a
number of considerati on on the
potenti al risks in using nanoparti cles
have to be studied

First, the major problem of

nanomaterials is the nanoparti cle
analysis.
Second, the informati on of
the chemical structure is a
criti cal factor to determine
how toxic a nonmaterial is,
and minor changes of
chemical functi on group
could drasti cally change its
properti es.

Third, full-risk assessment of
the safety on human health
and environmental impact
need to be evaluated at all
stages of nanotechnology.

Fourth, life-cycle risk

assessment is another factor.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT)

 In another study done by Lam, James,
McCluskey and Hunter. CNT was shown
to be more toxic than carbon black and
quartz once it reaches the lungs.

There are also ethical and societal
concerns about nanotechnology.
1. Issues on intellectual property;
2. Secrecy;
3. Legiti macy of scienti fi c results;
4. Privacy issues

According to Dr. Eric Drexler, author of
Engines of Creati on, there are four
challenges in dealing with the
development, impact and eff ects of
nanotechnology in society:
1. The Challenge of Technological
Development
2. The Challenge of Technological
Foresight
