FG - Types of Thematic Progression (Group 6)

The document discusses different types of thematic progression in texts: 1. Zig-zag or linear thematic progression where each rheme becomes the theme of the next clause in a linear fashion. 2. Theme re-iteration or constant thematic progression where the same theme is repeated at the beginning of clauses while different rhemes are linked to it to develop a topic. 3. Multiple theme or progression with derived themes where a rheme includes different pieces of information that each become a theme in subsequent clauses to gradually describe different aspects of a general hyper-theme.

Thematic Progression
According to Eggins (1994) Thematic Progression is the exchange
of information between Theme and Rheme pairings in a text. Themati
c Progression contributes to the cohesive development of a text and it
can strengthen the text’s coherence and cohesion.
Thematic progression refer to how themes interact with each other
and with rhemes in order to provide continuity and to organize the tex
t. Thematic progression concerns about where the themes come from a
nd how they relate to other themes and rhemes of the text.
Types of Progression
01. Zig-Zag Pattern / Linear Thematic
Progression

02. Theme Re-iteration Pattern / Constant

01. Zig-Zag Pattern / Linear Thematic
Progression

1. The Zig-Zag Pattern

Zig-Zag Pattern or Linear Thematic Progression In this sequence, an element that is fir
st introduced in the Rheme of a clause becomes the Theme of the next clause, and so on.
Each R becomes the T of the next utterance.
• T1------R1
•T2 (R1) ------ R2
•T3(R2) ------ R3
01. The Example of Zig-Zag Pattern
Theme 1 Rheme 1 I have a cat in my house

Theme 2 Rheme 2
The cat name is Livy
Theme 3 Rheme 3

Livy is really cute

02. Theme Re-iteration Pattern / Constant
Thematic Progression

Re-iteration Pattern or Constant Thematic Progression This pattern shows that th

e first theme is picked up and repeated in the beginning of the next clause. The s
ame theme (but not necessarily exactly the same words) appears in a series of utt
erances and different rhemes are linked up to it.

 Constant theme pattern is frequently used when characters in a story are devel
oped  The continuous, constant theme may be a place, a time, or a concept, abo
ut which the reader is informed through the relative rhemes.

 The progression is a sort of expansion on a specific topic (theme) which allows

the reader to concentrate on one specific topic to which different pieces of new in
formation are gradually added.
02. The Example of Theme Re-iteration Pattern
Theme 1 Rheme 1 Rani has a cat

Theme 2 Rheme 2
She really loves her cat
Theme 3 Rheme 3

She always take care of her cat
