Positional types refer to philosophical schools of thought or positions within branches of philosophy. There are typically competing positions for each branch, such as materialism versus dualism in metaphysics, or rationalism versus empiricism in epistemology. The document lists some examples of positional types like materialism and dualism, and notes that they are often named after influential philosophers like Plato, Confucius, or Thomas Aquinas who advanced those views. It also provides a brief overview of some of the major positional debates within several branches of philosophy such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and philosophy of mind.
