When do you have to use it:

1. To avoid a repetion of a previous noun

The climate of new york is like that of new Jersey.


(El clima de Nueva York es como la de Nueva Jersey.)

The rivers of America are longer than those Europe.


(Los ríos de américa son más largos que los de Europa.)

2. Refer to things which have been mentioned

Alcohol and Tabaco are injurious, This perhaps less than that.
