Storage & Handling of Weld Consumables - 1

The document discusses proper handling and storage of welding electrodes to ensure good weld quality. It states that electrodes must be protected from moisture, either through vacuum packaging or baking. It provides guidelines for storing electrodes in original packaging under clean, dry conditions until use. When transferring electrodes, they should be moved to preheated quivers at the work site within 4 hours of being issued to prevent moisture exposure. Proper handling and storage of electrodes is important to avoid defects and unnecessary costs from rework.

Storage & Handling of Electrodes

• Taking Proper Care of Filler Materials is Crucial to achieve good weld quality and avoiding
additional down time. Filler Materials that became damaged either by Moisture or
Contamination will provide poor weld quality and ultimately increases cost & rework.
• To ensure satisfactory weld quality, stick must be handled and stored properly before use.
• All Covered Electrodes are sensitive to Moisture pick up.

VACUUM PACKED ELECTRODES

• Vacuum packaging provides complete protection against moisture. (if the Vacuum
Package is not Damaged)
• The electrodes dose not require drying if we are using the Electrodes directly from
Vacuum Pack.
• Moisture in particular, is the biggest enemy of stick electrodes. Not only can it cause
porosity and hydrogen-induced cracking, but also it can result in costly downtime for
rework associated with these defects.

Good Practices to store & transfer of
Electrodes
 Storage

 Consumables shall be stored maintaining segregation with respect to manufacturer,

lot/batch number, Size, date received.
 Consumables shall be stored in original Containers Until Required for Use.
 Consumables shall be stored under clean & dry conditions having a maximum relative
humidity of 60% and minimum temperature of 20° C.
 The temperature & humidity shall be measured twice a day and to be recorded in a log.

 Issue

 Welding Consumables shall be issued on first-in first-out basis.

 All issues will be recorded by store keeper.
 Non Vacuum pack low hydrogen electrodes shall be backed in oven in accordance with
manufacturer recommendations.
 A log will be maintained to indicate the baking time and time of withdrawal to ensure that
the electrodes have not been over baked.
 The electrodes shall be transferred to holding oven maintained at 150°C
 Contents of each oven shall be clearly marked on the Out side of the door.

Good Practices to store & transfer of
Electrodes
 Transfer

 Electrodes shall be transferred to location in preheated Quivers set at minimum 70°C.

 Basic Low Hydrogen electrodes shall be used within 4 hrs. of issue from a Quiver
 Surplus Electrodes from the Quivers shall be returned to the stores after each day of
work.
Storing & Handling of Electrodes is every one Responsibility:

• Un used Electrodes to be handed over to Store.

• Check for the Calibration of Quivers and to request for Calibration in advance of One
month.
• Ensure that no electrodes are left out in Vehicles.
• Unused/damaged electrodes to be Quarantined.
• Check the temperature & working Conditions of Quivers.
• Before Opening the new pack ensure that the pack is not damaged.
• Ensure the Electrodes are not re baked. (Use Color Coding for Baking)
 Discuss in daily Tool Box talks.
