Definition: The supernatural ability

of being able to show compassion to
others.
Mercy
Description: The spiritual expression
that supernaturally enables a person
to cheerfully and practically help
those in need or to help to alleviate
suffering. It is putting compassion
into action.
Mercy
Results:
1.It focuses upon alleviating the
source of pain or suffering.
2.Especially sensitive to the needs of
the lonely and forgotten.
Mercy
Results:
3. Able to express love, grace, and
dignity to those facing hardships
or crisis.
4. Able to serve in difficult or
unsightly circumstances and do so
cheerfully.
Mercy
Cautions:
1.Need to remember that “rescuing”
a person from their pain may actually
hinder God’s work in their life.
Mercy
Cautions:
2. Guard yourself against becoming
angry about or angry towards the
source of other’s pain.
Mercy
Cautions:
3. When mercy is desperately
needed there is usually a need to
also strive for long term solutions.
Just treating the immediate
situation doesn’t often solve the
problem.
Mercy
Biblical Example:
James 2:12-17 (Message)
Talk and act like a person expecting to
be judged by the Rule that sets us free.
For if you refuse to act kindly, you can
hardly expect to be treated kindly. Kind
mercy wins over harsh judgment every
time.
Dear friends, do you think you'll get
anywhere in this if you learn all the right
words but never do anything? Does
merely talking about faith indicate that a
person really has it? For instance, you
come upon an old friend dressed in rags
and half-starved and say, "Good
morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be
filled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off
without providing so much as a coat or a
cup of soup—where does that get you?
Isn't it obvious that God-talk without
God-acts is outrageous nonsense?
Exhortation
paraklesis– to come along side of.

Definition: A supernatural ability to

come along side another person in
such a way as to call them into
strength.
Exhortation
Description: A supernatural
empowerment by the Holy Spirit
enabling a person to present truth so
as to strengthen, comfort, or urge to
action those who are discouraged or
wavering in their faith.
Exhortation
Results:
1.Able to come to the side of others
in a way that reassures them and
encourages them to continue.
2.Able to urge others into action by
applying biblical truth in appropriate
ways.
Exhortation
Results:
3. Able to challenge, confront, or
comfort others with the
assurance that they can trust and
hope in the promises and
provisions of God.
Exhortation
Results:
4. Keeps an emphasis on God’s
sovereignty and providence.
Encourages others to have
confidence in God’s faithfulness
to perform His will.
Exhortation
Cautions:
1.Don’t become overly optimistic, too
simplistic or flattering.
2.Don’t just “be positive” toward
another person if what they need is
for you to be confrontational.
Exhortation
Cautions:
3. Remember to take the time to
discover and understand what is
really happening in the other
person’s life before deciding what
they really need.
Exhortation
Biblical Example:
Acts 11:22-24 (NLT)
When the church at Jerusalem heard
what had happened, they sent Barnabas
to Antioch. 23When he arrived and saw
this evidence of God’s blessing, he was
filled with joy, and he encouraged the
believers to stay true to the
Lord. 24 Barnabas was a good man,
full of the Holy Spirit and strong in
faith. And many people were
brought to the Lord.
