FUNCTIONS OF

COMMUNICATION
QUESTIONS:

1. Why do people communicate?

2.How many of these reasons do (you as) students use
in daily communication?
3.Based on these reasons, what then are the functions
of communication?
4. What are the functions of communication?
Basically, there are five functions
of communication. These are
regulation and control, social
interaction, motivation, emotional
expression, and information
dissemination.
1. REGULATION AND
CONTROL
If the Speaker’s purpose is to control others by managing
their behavior, then the Speaker is using the function of
Regulation and Control.
Communication functions to control behavior.
Every organization has its regulations and these
regulations are communicated to all members in various
ways.
 For example:
1.A small organization such as a family has its
house rules which every member has to follow.
2.The school implements rules which students and
other members of the school community are
obliged to follow.
3.The dress code in a business organization
serves to dictate the style dressing among its
members, particularly the employees.
4.In the school setting, a security officer
may hinder a student or a school visitor
from entering.
5.A dean may oblige the faculty members
to attend a seminar-workshop.
6.A teacher may require a student to turn
off their cell phones.
This function is also demonstrated by the
simple act of telling someone to be quiet.
2.SOCIAL
INTERACTION
Communication allows individuals to interact with
others. The most familiar and the primary reason why
people communicate. Because of the needs to
interact daily, people communicate.
Humans talk for the sole purpose of coming together
as a society.
For example:

1.  A family becomes close not because they live under

the same roof, but because each member interacts with
another.
2. Friends get together to interact and enjoy each other’s
company.
3. A new acquaintance can become a friend by getting to
know that person through more opportunities for
interaction.
3.MOTIVATION
This is when the Speaker’s purpose is to
persuade or try to persuade another person to
change his/her opinion, attitude, or behavior.

Communication motivates or encourages people

to live better.

Motivation is either internal or external

1. INTERNAL MOTIVATION comes
from within. It is something personal.
For example:
A student is motivated to study hard
because of his desires to graduate with
honors.
2. EXTERNAL MOTIVATION emanates from
the outside or from people surrounding him.
For example:
A student is motivated to study hard because
of his father's promise to give him an
expensive car once he graduates with
honors.
Encouraging words serve to stimulate people to perform
or do better, that is, motivate them in a positive way.

For example:
1.A breast cancer patient may desire to live longer after
he hears words of hope from his loved ones.
2.A failing student may continue pursuing his chosen
career path the moment he hears words of
encouragement from the school's guidance counselor.
4.EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION
• Emotional Expression is used by a Speaker for the purpose of moving
another person to action. The Speaker appeals to the Listener’s
feelings and emotions to encourage him/her to act in a particular
direction.
• Communication facilitates people's expression of their feelings and
emotions.
• Communication does not involve ideas only. It also involves emotions
• As an individual communicates, he emotes.
For Example:
Receiving Messages that include pictures of the devastation
brought about by a typhoon such as Yolanda, or
photos of children dying or crying because of hunger.

The Receiver of the Message cannot help but be moved to

do something:

donate money, clothes, food, and water, or even volunteer to

help build new houses for the victims.
For Example:
When one informs another about the
supertyphoon, the informer impending may
emotions in different situations. express various
1.As he informs his loved ones, he may show fear because their
house is not a safe place to stay when there is a supertyphoon.
2.He may show love or concern as he informs them for them to
get ready for the calamity.
3.He may show joy and excitement as he envisions another day
of no classes or a grand vacation.
5.INFORMATION DISSEMINATION

• This Function is used when the Speaker wants to

make others aware of certain data, concepts, and
processes – knowledge that may be useful to them.
This may be something as serious as knowing what
the COVID virus is and how to avoid getting it.
5.INFORMATION DISSEMINATION

• Communication functions convey

to information.
• Many events incidents happen
or everyday. These occurrences
affect
people so they have to be informed.
For example:
1.A new policy to be implemented school- wide
has to be made known to all members before its
implementation.
2.The school administration must tell all students
enrolled in board courses such accountacy and
engineering, specifically the grades that they have
to earn for them to be retained.
