Research IV - Research Logbook and Photodocumentation

This document provides guidelines for maintaining a research logbook. It states that the logbook should be bound and contain dated entries in non-erasable ink for all research activities. Entries should include descriptions of procedures, data collected, and signatures. Photographs and backup copies should also be included to document the research process. Adhering to these guidelines ensures the logbook provides an accurate record that can be reviewed by judges.

• Pages without entries are written
with a straight line from top to

• No blank pages in the data
logbook (Front and back pages of

• Minimize erasures;
erasures should be
crossed-out once with a
signature affixed and the
date

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• It is advisable to write the entries
daily; for days with no research-
related activity, "none" can be
written or you can also write no
research-related activity

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Write the entries every after
the activity not after all the
research is finished
• Acquired research-related
documents are included in the
data logbook

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Entries can be written in
paragraphs or bullets of
narration of activities

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Tables and figures are
presented (specifically the
data gathered with
signatures of the Qualified
Scientist, Research Adviser
and or Coach

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Quantitative Data has units
of measurement
• Date, time and location is
included in every entries

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Divide the data logbook into two parts:
A.Research-related activity conducted for the
day ( example: meeting or conference with
research adviser/coach, library, start of
experimentation, phases of your methods) –
also include the setting
B.Data/ Information Gathered …
> Include the signature of the people responsible

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Entries can be written in past tense
or future tense depending on your
activity or entry
already done - past tense
plan of activity - future tense
research plan - future tense
• Give emphasis on the action (do not
include the doer)
>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>
• Make a back-up copy of the data
logbook (Scan or picture) online
• Receipts of purchases, bus tickets,
request orders, permission letters
are attached in the data logbook
with corresponding dates

Please Take Note
DATES
Manuscript/Intel ISEF Forms/
Logbook (certifications and
receipts) --- must coincide

Important Reminders
• Judges during science fairs would
usually ask for the data logbook
first. Hence presenting a well-
written and complete data
logbook will be an advantage.

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Because of its importance, it is
suggested that each page of the
data logbook is scanned. These
soft copies can then be uploaded
online to serve as a back-up in
case it is LOST, spilled with liquid
or even BURNT.

>> 0 >> 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>

• Keep all research-related items
including the small ones such as
receipts of purchases, request orders in
laboratories and bus tickets from
hometown to the regulated research
institution.
• Attach this to the page with corresponding date in
the data logbook. This may just come useful.
