Introduction To Earthquake Engineering

This document outlines the policies, grading system, weekly requirements, and topics for a course on Principles of Earthquake Engineering. The course aims to help students understand earthquake occurrence, seismic design codes, and analyzing structures for earthquake resistance. Over six weeks, topics will include dynamics of vibration, time history analysis, response spectra, soil effects on ground motion like liquefaction, earthquake effects on structures, and relating design codes to seismic structural analysis. Students will complete homework, discussions, quizzes, and exams each week to demonstrate their comprehension of the key concepts.

COURSE
OBJECTIVE
After completing the course modules, students will be
able to
1.describe understanding about earthquakes, their
worldwide distribution, what causes them, their likely
damage mechanisms, earthquake
measuring scales, and current efforts on the prediction of
strong seismic ground motions
2.solve the magnitude of the earthquake
3.compute the base shear using equivalent lateral force
(ELF) method considering different structural systems
4.solve and distribute the seismic force along the height
of the building
5.Solve the overturning moment of the structure
6.compute the drift limitation of the structures
7.solve base shear using dynamic analysis
COURSE OUTCOMES
This course is a specialized professional course for civil engineering students in structural
engineering track designed to understand the theoretical, practical, and computational
aspects of the earthquake excitation i n relation to structural design.
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

1.Understand the occurrence and origin of earthquakes.

2.Apply the latest developments in the earthquake and seismic design relevance to the
National Structural Code of the Philippines.
3.Analyze structures considering different types of earthquake lateral force resisting
structural system
