Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants

This document discusses sexual reproduction in flowering plants. It describes the male and female reproductive organs (stamen/anther and pistil). It explains the stages of sexual reproduction: 1) pollination, 2) fertilization, 3) seed dispersal, and 4) germination. It also briefly mentions asexual reproduction in unicellular and multicellular organisms, and defines key terms related to sexual reproduction in animals.

Sexual Reproduction

in Flowering Plants
Parts of a Flower
Male Reproductive Organs

• Stamen – male reproductive part

• Anther – produces pollen that contains male sex
cells
• Filament – holds up the anther
Parts of a Flower
Female Reproductive Organs

• Pistil – female reproductive part

• Stigma – sticky surface that traps pollen
• Style – joins the stigma and th ovary
• Ovary – contains the female sex cells called ovules
Stages of Sexual Reproduction
in Plants
1. Pollination

• Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the

stigma
• self-pollination – same plant
• cross-pollination – different plant

2. Fertilization

• The pollen lands on the stigma, and a tube-like

structure grows from the stigma and elongates to
form the pollen tube
• The pollen tube continues to grow with the male
gamete downawards
• The pollen tube then bursts
• Ovary swells and ripen to form a fruit

3. Seed Dispersal

• To prevent overcrowding and competition for basic

needs, seeds together with its fruit are carried
away from a parent plant in a process called
dispersal

4. Germination

• When the seed lands on

the ground, it breaks
through the seed coat and
forms a new plant
Asexual Reproduction
in Animals
Unicellular
Amoeba or Paramecium

• They undergo binary fission

Multicellular
• Budding – offspring from an outgrowth or bud
• Fragmentation – separated pieces develop into an
individual

in Animals
Terms to Remember
• Testes – produce the male gametes
• Ovaries – produce the female gametes
• Hermaphrodites – possess both male and female
organs
Terms to Remember
• Fertilization – union of gametes to produce
offspring
• External Fertilization – occurs outside the body
• Internal Fertilization – occurs inside the body
