A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying geospatial data. GIS software like QGIS, gVSIG, Whitebox GAT, SAGA GIS and GRASS GIS allow users to apply GIS for mapping, telecommunications network planning, urban and transportation planning, environmental and agricultural analysis, and disaster management. Commercial software like ArcGIS from ESRI provides comprehensive GIS capabilities through its ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcInfo applications.
