ww1 Central Powers Lecture

The Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. They were allied at the start of WWI. The Central Powers had powerful militaries but lacked resources. They fought for motives like protecting alliances, gaining territory and resources, and responding to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. However, the Central Powers ultimately failed due to running out of supplies as the Triple Entente outproduced and blockaded them, leading to the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empires after WWI ended.

The Central Powers

• By: Matthew Manneh

• World History Grade 10

Learning Objective and
Standard
• Students will gain a better understanding of the Central
Powers in World War 1. Students will also analyze the
motives of this Alliance.

• California Standard: 10.5: 1. Analyze the arguments for

entering into war presented by leaders from all sides of
the Great War and the role of political and economic
rivalries, ethnic and ideological conflicts, domestic
discontent and disorder, and propaganda and nationalism
in mobilizing the civilian population in support of “total
war.”
Intro Activity
• You are the leader of the German Empire. Spend the
next three minutes writing down your motives to
participate in this war, and why.

• For example: Greed, because more land=more

resources, more resources=more money.

• After you have completed this, discuss with your table

of 3 more minutes about what your motives were. We
will come back to this later in the lecture.
Who Were the Central Powers

• The Central Powers consisted of

Germany, Austria-Hungary, and
the Ottoman Empire, or what is
today know as Turkey.

• These countries already had

alliances when World War 1
started, which is why they stay
allies through the war.
German Empire

• AKA the Second Reich

• AT this time it was still made up

of individual kingdoms.

• The Germans had one of the most

powerful militaries at the time
and became a world power due to
incredibly fast industrialization.
Austria-Hungarian Empire

• AKA the Dual Monarchy

• One of the industrial powers of

the world, behind the US,
Germany, and the United
Kingdom

• Dissolved towards the end of

World War 1, because of
infighting in their own empire.
Ottoman Empire

• The Ottoman Empire came to

power when they sacked
Constantinople in 1453.

• The entered the war by attacking

Russia on the Black Sea.

• They also joined the war because

they needed more resources, but
many reasons are still unclear.
Reasons

• As we have just discussed some reasons amongst

ourselves, here are some of the reasons historians
have discovered.

• The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand,

Power on a global stage, access to more resources.
Failures of the Central Powers
• The Central Powers were well trained, and had the
ammunition to keep the war going.

• They ran out of food and other necessities that expedited

their loss.

• With multiple other countries assisting the Triple Entente

with munitions, food and other necessities, they easily
outlasted the Central Powers.

• The Triple Entente also executed multiple blockages of the

supply lines to troops.
The Effects
• With losing the War, Germany
was made to pay major
compensation.

• The Treaty of Versailles, stated

the rules and terms of the loss,
these sanctions helped to cause
what would be World War 2.

• The Austro-Hungarian Empire

disbanded as did the Ottoman
Empire. The map to the left shows
what became of those empires.
Europe Post WW1
• Europe continued to industrialize post World War 1.

• President Woodrow Wilson introduces the League of

Nations, which is a precursor to what is now the United
Nations.

• Germany has a struggling economy for years, and

eventually the resentment from years of heavy taxation
and punishment from the Treaty of Versailles leads to
WW2.
Europe Post WW1 cont.
• Much of Europe was
devastated by this war. Cities
were destroyed, thousands of
people lost.

• A scene in Wonder Woman

does show what the war was
like for most soldiers, and
how some towns and cities
were destroyed.

Summary

• With your table, come up with a brief summary of

what we have gone over. Only one needs to be
submitted, all names can go on the submitted
summary. After you write your summary, discuss
what you might have done differently had you been a
leader for one of the Central Powers. Would you have
done what you can to avoid war?

Final Activity

• On a separate sheet of paper, write a brief reflection of

World war 1 from a citizen of one of the Central
powers. This takes place after the war has ended, so
write it similar to a journal entry. You can write from
the perspective of a young solider who just came
back, a leader who lost, or as a simple civilian who
witnessed it. This should be approximately half a page
to 1 page long.
