Design and Planning of Sanitation System in Rajbari District

This document summarizes the design and planning of a sanitation system for low-income areas in Rajbari District, Bangladesh. It includes an introduction to single offset pour flush latrines and their key components. It also provides a SWOT analysis of sanitation options for low-income communities. The document then details design parameters like groundwater levels, population density and soil conditions. It presents layout designs and a cost estimation for building an individual pour flush latrine. Finally, it outlines management strategies to make the system low-cost and concludes that the designed system provides privacy, prevents odor and groundwater pollution, and is easily maintained.

Design Parameters
General Survey Report for Rajbari District
o Average Ground Water level - (5-6) m [1]

o Population Density – 940/km 2 (Ideal population density) [2]

o Soil Condition – Deltaic Land (Low Permeability) [2]
o Flood Prone Area (In 1987 & 1988 almost 97% of houses went under 3 ft. of water) [1]
Volume & Depth Calculation
o Number of family members – 8 people,
o Considering life time of - 8 years,
o As Wet system, Sludge Accumulation Rate – 0.04 m3/person/year.

 Volume of the pit = 1.33 * ( C * P * N) [ 1.33 is multiplied for pit depth < 4m]
= 1.33 * ( 0.04 * 8 * 8) m3 = 3.4 m3.
o Let’s assume, Pit Diameter = 1.5 m
o Calculating, Effective Depth = 1.93 m
  Sources:
 Total Depth of the Pit = (1.93 + 0.5) m = 2.43 m.1. http://geodesh.weebly.com/

Design Consideration
 Flood Prone Area,
 Low Income Area,
 Soil is Deltaic Type.

Cost Estimation & Management Strategies
Cost Estimation: Strategies behind this design
SL Items Qu Unit Price per Total Cost of  As the project is for low income client,
No. anti unit individual
the project needs to be low-cost and
ty (taka) items (taka)
c cost- effective.
1. Pour-Flush squatting 1 pcs 600 600
 Possibilities of drowning of the pit
pan (Medium Size)
2. RCC Ring (1.5m 4 pcs 700 2,800 during the flood as it is one the major f
diameter) flood affected area in the country.
3. Pit & base (Brickwork) 215 pcs 8 1,720  Less possibilities of aquifer contamination
4. Cement (50kgs bags) 4 bags 430 1,720 as the GWL isn’t that high.
 Cover of the pit to be water resistant so
5. Sand 5 m3 30 150
that the flood water can’t get into the
6. Nails and GI wires 2 kgs 80 160 pit.
7. Roofing sheet 6 pcs 500 3,000  Emptying procedure is hazard free and not
too frequent.
8. Vent Pipe (¾ in) 8 rft 40 320

9. Sludge Connecting Pipe 4.5 rft 190 850  Management plan

(2” diameter)
10. Timber 4 pcs 100 400  As per the requirement the volume of the pit
was 3.4 m3
11. Plastic Chair, Utensils 1 pcs 500 500

12. Labour Cost 3 days 1500 4,500  The pit has a life cycle of 8 years.

13. Transportation Cost - - - 500  So, the emptying period should be 7-8
  Total       17,220 years.
Conclusion
 No problems with flies and odour.
 Can easily be cleaned.
 No fear of falling into the pits.
 Doesn’t pollute ground water.
 Toilet can be located inside or very near to the house, thus
privacy is maintained.
 Easily applicable for long-term use as pit can be cleaned easily.
 Material availability and easy management process.
