SHELL STRUCTURE
A SHELL STRUCTURE IS A THIN CURVED MEMBRANE OR
SLAB USUALLY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE THAT
FUNCTIONS BOTH AS STRUCTURE AND COVERING.
THE TERM “SHELL” IS USED TO DESCRIBE THE
STRUCTURES WHICH POSSESS STRENGHT AND RIGIDITY
DUE TO ITS THIN, NATURAL AND CURVED FORM SUCH
AS SHELL OF EGG, A NUT, HUMAN SKULL, AND SHELL
OF TORTISE.
BASIC CLASSIFICATION
• SINGLE CURVATURE SHELL ARE • DOUBLE CURVATURE SHELL: ARE
CURVED ON ONE LINEAR AXIS AND CURVED ON TWO LINEAR AXIS.
ARE A PART OF A CYLINDER OR CONE EITHER PART OF A SPHERE, OR A
IN THE FORM OF BARREL VAULTS HYPERBOLOID OF REVOLUTION.
AND CONOID SHELLS.

THE TERMS SINGLE CURVATURE AND DOUBLE CURVATURE DO NOT PROVIDE A PRECISE GEMOETRIC
DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE FORM OF SHELL BECAUSE A BARREL VAULT IS SINGLE CURVATURE BUT SO
IS A DOME.

THE TERMS SINGLE AND DOULBE CURVATURE ARE USED TO DISTINGUISH THE COMPARITIVE RIGIDITY
OF THE TWO FORMS AND COMPLEXITY OF CENTRING NECESSARY TO CONSTRUCT THE SHELL FORM.
APPLICATION OF SHELL
STRUCTURE
There are two principal uses of shells in architecture.

1. Industrial structures:
– tanks, cooling towers, reactor vessels etc.
2. Aesthetic and architectural special structures.

ADVANTAGES
-Very light form of construction. To
span 30m shell thickness required is
just 60mm.

-Dead load can be reduced
economizing foundation and
supporting systems.

-Arch shapes can be longer span.

-Aesthetically looks good over other
forms.

-Naturally strong structures.

-Less internal supports, giving open,
unobstructed interior.
DISADVANTAGES
-Since concrete is porous material,
concrete domes often have issues
with sealing. If not treated
rainwater can seep through the roof
and leak into the interior.

-Seamless construction prevents air
from escaping ad can lead to
condensation built up inside the
shell.

-Shell centering cost is very high.

-Cost of labour is high and
supervision is required.

-Greater accuracy in formwork is
required.
ELLIPSOI
D
ELLIPSOID MEANING ELLIPSE LIKE.

ELLIPSOID IS A SURFACE THAT MAY

BE OBTAINED FROM A SPHERE BY
DEFORMING IT BY MEANS OF
DIRECTIONAL SCALING.

GEOMETRIC DEFINATION: An
ellipsoid is a quadric surface, ie. a
surface that may be defined as the
zero set of polynomials of degree
two in three variables.
An ellipsoid is characterized
by either of the two
following properties.
1. Every planer cross section is an
ellipse.
2. It is bounded, meaning; it can be
enclosed in a sufficiently large
sphere.
An ellipsoid has three
pairwise
• Perpendicular axes of
symmetry which intersect
at a center of symmetry,
called the center of the
ellipsoid.
• The line segments that are
delimited on the axes of
symmetry by the ellipsoid
are called the principal
axes, or simply axes of the
ellipsoid.
• The axes uniquely defined.

Concepts
Challenge was to built a futuristic
building which understands the field
of computers and software dealing
with cutting edge technology and
speaks a similar hi-tech language.

Designed by Ar. Hafeez Contractor

The project took six months with a Rs.

13 crores project cost, to construct
the unique steel framed shell with
glass and aluminium cladding.
• The internal built form
consists of 1,50,000 sqft of
usable floor space on five
floors
• This internal building
structure is made of
reinforced cement concrete
and brickwork.
• It houses the workspaces,
offices, meeting rooms, other
ancillary areas and services.
Structural Features
• The enveloping shell has a form derived from an
ellipsoid.
• This partially cut ellipsoid
• measures 105m along its longer axis and
• 65m along its shorter axis
• It rises to height of 35m and is tilted to an angle
of 10 degrees.
• Due to the tilting, one of its ends appears to be
buried into the ground and the other is lifted up.
• The surface of the ellipsoidal shell, due to its
doubly curved character, is strong and rigid,
despite being lightweight.
• It employs grid shell geometry
• The entire shell rests on an elliptical base ring and
a Mediterranean main member, which runs in the
vertical plane along the long axis of the ellipsoid.
• The shell is divided into sixteen radial parts.
• The surface of the shell is formed out of a
trapezoidal grid. The individual module of the grid
is not curved, which forms a part of the whole
ellipsoidal surface.

surrounded by an artificial
lake.

Seats 5,452 people in three

halls and is almost 12,000 m²
in size.

It was designed by French

architect Paul Andreu.

Construction started in
December 2001 and the
inaugural concert was held in
December 2007.

Construction cost is 300

million euros.
Design features
• The exterior of the theatre is
a titanium-accented glass dome
• Surrounded by a man-made lake.
• It is said to look like an egg floating on
water, or a water drop.
• It was designed as an iconic feature,
something that would be immediately
recognizable.
• The dome measures
• 212 meters in east–west direction,
• 144 meters in north–south direction,
• and is 46 meters high.
• The main entrance is at the north
side.
• The titanium shell is broken by a glass
curtain in north–south direction that
gradually widens from top to bottom.
