INDONESIA
#1 High Power Distance

Power distance is the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country
expect and accept that power is distributed unequally.
Indonesia tends to be regarded as high power distance culture due to the unequal rights between bosses and
subordinates as it characteristics power is distributed unequally, subordinates are blamed for mistakes. Employees
expect to be told what to do and when. Control is expected and managers are respected for their position.
#2 Uncertainty avoidance

Indonesia scores (48) on this dimension and thus has a low preference for avoiding uncertainty. Relationship
harmony is very important in Indonesia, and no one wishes to be the transmitter of bad or negative news or
feedback. Another aspect of this dimension can be seen in Conflict resolution. Direct Communication as a method
of conflict resolution is often seen to be a threatening situation and one that the Indonesian is uncomfortable in.
#3 Collectivist

Indonesia is a collectivist society. This means there is a high preference for a strongly defined
social framework in which individuals are expected to conform to the ideals of the society
and the in-groups to which they belong. One place this is visible clearly is in the aspect of
the family in the role of relationships.
#4 Short Term Orientations

Short Term Orientation are related to the past and present, and respect for tradition (Hofstede, 2005). Culture with
a short term orientation value the past and present time. They attach importance to actions and attitudes that are
affected by the past or the present.

Indonesia belong to short term orientation culture due to Indonesian’s tradition. Indonesian people are very
much characterized by many ritual activities, both in relation to culture and religion.
#5 Restraint

This dimension is related to basic human desires related to enjoying life. Indulgence has the characteristics of
satisfying the basic and natural desires associated with enjoying life and having fun. In contrast, the restraint has
the characteristics of a community controlling satisfaction of needs with applicable social norms (Hofstede, 2011).

Indonesia has a relatively low indulgence score of 38. It shows that Indonesia has a restraint culture. This cultural
orientation has a perception that their actions are controlled by social norms, and they assume that pampering
themselves is wrong (Irawan, 2017).
#6 Femininity & Masculinity

In feminine countries the focus is on “working in order to live”, managers strive for consensus, people value
equality, solidarity and quality in their working lives, gender roles overlap.
A high score (masculine) on this dimension indicates that the society will be driven by competition, achievement
and success, gender roles are clearly distinct.
#6 Femininity

“Femininity stands for a society in Indonesia are on dimension of

which social gender roles overlap: feminine culture that is where
Both men and women are supposed gender roles are more fluid and
to be modest, tender, and concerned both men and women are expected
with the quality of life.” From to be nurturing and focused on
