Hybrid Metal Matrix Composite: Faculty Guide: S. Seralathan

Hybrid metal matrix composites are advanced materials used in aerospace and automotive industries for lightweight, high-strength applications. The students designed and analyzed a connecting rod using different materials, including A356 aluminum alloy and A356 composites reinforced with silicon carbide and fly ash, using SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS software. Their analysis found that the A356 composite fabricated using stir cum squeeze casting with 5% silicon carbide and 10% fly ash experienced the lowest total deformation, equivalent elastic strain, and equivalent stress under loading compared to the other materials considered.

INTRODUCTION
The sustainable industry growth and people’s life improvement greatly depends on the use of
alternative product in various fields. Hybridisation is a process of incorporating two or more
reinforcements in order to yield better stiffness, strength, high strength to weight ratio and
other mechanical properties.
Hybrid metal matrix composite are advanced materials used for light weight high strength
applications in aerospace and automobile sector. Among the various techniques employed in
fabricating metal matrix composites stir casting technique is simple and economical.
The connecting rod is required to transmit the compressive and tensile forces from the piston,
and rotate at both ends.
Softwares Used:
 SOLIDWORKS software is used to create the three dimensional geometry model of the
connecting rod .
 ANSYS is used for analysis of connecting rod.
Work we have done
Materials used: A356, A356-5%SiC-10%Flyash stir cum squeeze casting, A356-5%SiC10%Flyash
stir casting and Al2024-T3.
 We designed a Connecting rod using Solid works and analysis is carried out using ANSYS.
 Parameters found by using ANSYS are Total deformation, Equivalent elastic strain, equivalent
stress.

Conclusion
The stress analysis of the connecting rod based on finite element method (FEM) is carried out
using finite element code ANSYS. Four different materials is chosen for the connecting rod viz.,
A356, A356-5%SiC10%Flyash stir casting, A356-5%SiC-10%Flyash stir cum squeeze casting and
Al2024-T3. The static mechanical properties namely, total deformation, equivalent elastic strain,
and equivalent (von-misses) stress is calculated. On comparing the mechanical properties, it is
observed that A356-5%SiC-10%Flyash stir cum squeeze casting material gives lesser total
deformation, equivalent elastic strain and equivalent stress among all the tested materials.
