Self-concept is an individual's mental model of who they are, including their beliefs about their characteristics, abilities, and how they see themselves. It encompasses the answer to "Who am I?". Self-concept is shaped by a person's values, beliefs, social identities, abilities, goals and tends to solidify with age as one gains more self-knowledge and experience. Examples of components of self-concept include beliefs about personality traits, social and cultural identities, and perceptions of one's abilities and goals.

What is Self Concept?

Self-concept is a thought of as our individual perceptions of our behavior, abilities, and unique characteristics.It is a mental picture of who you
are as a person.One's self-concept is a collection of beliefs about oneself. Generally, self-concept embodies the answer to "Who am I?". Self-
concept is distinguishable from self-awareness, which refers to the extent to which self-knowledge is defined, consistent, and currently
applicable to one's attitudes and
dispositions.

examples are belief such as;

• I am a kind person
• I am a good friend
• I am Helpful to others
Social
 is a self concept based on the social nature of the self. The
emphasis is on self-esteem along with self-centrality, self-
complexity, social interest, identification, power, marginality,
openness, and majority identification.

Values 
are a culture's standard for discerning what is good and just in
society. Values are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or
motivate attitudes or actions. 

Beliefs 
are the tenets or convictions that people hold to be true.
Someone’s belief that something will happen or what they
believe that what they or others can do.
Abilities
 a comprise mental representations of someone’s own abilities in
general or in specific academic domains.It is someone’s ability to do
something they can do that others can not.

Goals
Someone's goals or what they want to achieve in a the future.A goal is
what they want to be in the future with a specific time. A goal is an
idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of people
envision, plan and commit to achieve
• Self-concept tends to be more malleable when people are younger
and still going through the process of self-discovery and identity
information. As people age, self-perceptions become much more
detailed and organized as people form a better idea of who they
are and what is important to them.

• The individual self consists of attributes and personality traits


that differentiate us from other individuals. Examples include
introversion or extroversion.

• The collective self reflects our membership in social groups. The


examples include British, Republican or African-American.
