Interjections

Surprise, disbelief, joy, disappointment


– these and other emotions or feelings are often
expressed by interjections.
• Interjections are special words that show
strong feelings or emotions including –
• Interjections
• Interjections can be followed by a Comma
• Interjections are words used as exclamations.
• When an interjection shows mild feelings, a
comma follows it. Note: the word following the
comma is not capitalized unless it is a proper
noun or pronoun.
• 􀂃 Oh, that test was easy.
• 􀂃 Oh, I did well on that test.
• Because most interjections are
conversational and generally do
not clarify a sentence’s meaning,
they should be used sparingly in
formal writing or not at all.
• Here are some common interjections
• GOSH - mild surprise
• GADZOOKS –shock/surprise
• YIKES- fear / scare/ undesirable circumtances
• WOW –excitement / pleasure/ admiration
• GEE WHIZ – annoyance / surprise..
“Whatever..”
• YIPPEE – joy/ excitement
• YUCKY /EUW – disgusting/ gross / revolting

rest of the sentence by an
exclamation point or a comma.

without the interjection.

• Example 1: Ouch! That hurts
• Example 2: Well, that’s finally over.
• Example 3: Oh, you don’t mean that.
• Example 4: Great! Let’s go to the fair.
• Example 5: Wow! What a great idea.
Example 6: Okay, I will go and play if you
want me to do so.
Example 7: Feed me, Mama!
Example 8: Yazoo!! The tornado is over.
Example 9: I’m going to be over, oh, in
about 10 minutes.
Example 10: Greasy Grasshoppers! This
is slippery.
