PAYING ATTENTION LESSON 1
PROVERBS 4:1
“Listen, my sons, to a father’s
instruction; pay attention and gain
understanding.”
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY
PAYING ATTENTION?
Proverbs 1:7-9
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction
8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
1. CONSCIENTIOUS AND
CONSCIOUS LISTENING.
When we pay attention to the instructions
given to us, whether by God through His word
or by our parents or by someone in authority,
we condition ourselves to follow exactly what
we have just heard. This means you will
carefully consider the instruction given and
will act on it with all your heart.
2. RESPONDING POSITIVELY
TO INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN.
Paying attention requires the willingness to do what is
commanded. It is not, as our parents to put it, listening
with one ear and losing the information through the other
ear. To illustrate this, a student who was about to take an
examination was instructed to carefully red ALL the
questions BEFORE he answers. Realizing that each of the
items was very easy, he breezed through answering every
question even if he has not yet finished reading ALL the
items given. After answering the 99th question, he began
reading the item number 100. To his dismay, it instructed
him to just answer the first 20 questions. Because he did
not pay attention, he failed the examination.
3. “SAFE KEEPING THE
VALUABLES”
Imagine someone who owns expensive jewelries. Since
she cannot wear it all times, she keeps her priceless
possessions safe. Even if she wears them, she takes extra
care of her valuables. This is the exact idea behind paying
attention. The instructions given, particularly those from
the Bible, are priceless in that they will help us make
wise decisions and honor God with our life. We treat
every single one of them as a treasured possession and
will do anything to safeguard them. When we keep God’s
commands in our hearts and seek to follow them, we are
safekeeping the valuables and enriching our lives with
the very Word of God.
WHAT BENEFITS ARE
BROUGHT TO US BY PAYING
ATTENTION TO GOD’S
INSTRUCTIONS
1. It shows our fear of the Lord
2. It leads to wisdom
Proverbs 19:20
“Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in
the end you will be wise.”
3. It assures us of the abundant life.
Proverbs 4:22
…for they are life to those who find them and health to a
man’s whole body…” and Proverbs 3:1-2 “My son, do
not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your
heart, for they will prolong your life many years and
bring you prosperity.
4. It helps us receive favor from God.
Proverbs 8:34-35
“Blessed is the man who listens …
finds life and receives favor from the
Lord.”
5. It is so that your trust may be in
the Lord.
Proverbs 22:19
“So that your trust may be in the
Lord.”
6. It is so that you may be guided.
Proverbs 6:23
“For these commands are a lamp, this
teaching is a light, and the corrections
of discipline are the way to life.”
