ANIMAL FEEDS

At the end of the lesson, students should be

able to:
i. define the terms: food, diet, feed and ration;
ii. list five examples tools used in animal feeds
and;
iii. mention four major types of animal feeds.
Types of Animal Feeds
Animal feeds can be grouped into four. They
are:
1. Basal or energy feeds
2. Protein concentrates
3. Supplement/Additives
4. Roughages
ROUGHAGES
Roughages are plant materials rich in fibre and
provide the bulk fodder used n grazing farm
animals.
Roughages can be presented to farm animals in
the following ways:
i. Hay
ii. Silage
iii. Soilage/Zero grazing
iv. Straw
Hay can be referred to as grasses and legumes fed onto farm animals.
These grasses and legumes are cut at a vegetative age.

Silo refers to plant materials partly fermented in air-tight container and

used in feeding farm animals. Well-made silage gives the animals a good
smell.

Soilage is a situation whereby the animals are fed with grasses. Animals
are kept indoor in this type of method.

Straw consists of dried plant materials and crop residues, fed to animals
as maintenance ration during the period of feed scarcity.
Qualities of a Feed
1. The feed should be cost effective.
2. The feed must meet nutritional requirement of
the animal.
3. The feed must be palatable to the animal.
4. The feed must be readily available and easily
produced.
5. Correct size of feed must be used for correct size
of feed should be given to the farm animals.
