(GD)

Group Discussion
Concept:
• Group discussion is a form of discussion where people
are expected to participate in a systematic discussion
on a particular topic.
• In GD the topic has to be dealt with logic and maturity.
• The purpose of GD is to judge candidate on sound
logical reasoning and ability to respect another’s point
of view.
• In GD the candidate needs to contribute substantially
and add on to existing knowledge base.

Importance of GD:-
• To develop “meeting” philosophy.

• A GD is a simulation of a meeting at the


workplace.

• GD judges the right attitude to become

Similarity between GD and meeting:-

• Ability to initiate a discussion.
• Ability to summarize.
• Number of times you expressed an independent opinion
• Overall relevance of point
• Ability to illustrate your points with relevant examples or
statistics
• Eye contact and hand movements
• Voice level and audibility
• Number of times you interrupt a person or are interrupted by
one.
• Involvement with group –interested /attentive or disinterested
/careless.
• Manner of participation-inviting discussion, dominating or
conclusion oriented.

Tips for Good Opening
• Not sound arrogant and proud to others.
• Be humble, polite and firm.
• Not guide the discussion on one track but rather
help in opening the different layers, issues,
concepts or aspects involved.
• Be the torch bearer of the group discussion.
• Respect the other participants and acknowledge
their presence.
• Not forget to greet them in the beginning.
Tips for Approaching a Topic
• Greet all the participants.
• State the topic.
• Pick up the key words and
dissect/define/interpret them.
• State the related issues or concepts involved.
• See to it that enough light is thrown on the topic.
• Give the justification first and the stand
later
Tips for Proper Closing
• Keep jotting down the points being discussed.

• The opinion, both ‘yes’ and ‘no’ of the candidates, should


be recorded.

• You can try to reach some kind of consensus.

• For certain topics or issues, reaching at consensus may


not be possible. However, if you keep attempting towards
striking a cord of unanimity, it unmistakably reveals that
you are capable at or inclined to working as a tem-player.

• This also exhibits your careful planning on one hand and


attentiveness on the other.

Standard Rules:
• Do not appoint a leader, a leader should
emerge on his own.
• Do not allocate the time.
• Do not ask for permission to start.
• Do not ask the meaning of topic or word
• Do not attempt to memorize the names.
• Do not see fellow participants as competitors
but view them as contributors to your success.
